I agree with this post deeply, but most people dont. I still hear a lot of friends saying things like, if you dont have anything to hide, then theres no problem with Facebook monitoring every piss you take...
I think it was Andreas Antonopoulos who said, and Im paraphrasing, it doesnt matter that they take your data, until it matters, meaning governments change, and when they do the way they use our data changes, today it might not be deeply life threatening, but it could easily become that way, one small step at a time.
Things go from acceptable to terrible, one small step at a time, and it only takes our acquiessence to get there.
Have you looked into web alternatives like Substratum? As I understand it, they provide access to the internet through a decentralized network of like minded people who offer their computing power to support the network, and enable my (or your) use of the internet, without big brother monitoring every step you make.
Probably a good idea...
then again if the IBM built-in backdoors are in fact a reality all hopes for privacy have been and will always be for naught. Let's hope it's just a story to scare the seekers - if not then everything's already in storage somewhere and has been since the days of AOL ;)
I was trolling through the registry in Win98 back in the day, and found an entry called 'NSAKey'. I didn't get any substantive answers to my inquiries from Microshaft, so I deleted the key.
Didn't break anything.
I'm pretty sure hardware is backdoored. When you become aware of various doors that let problems in, you can start closing them. Even if you don't close them all, and aren't completely secure, you can limit how and how easily they can come at you.
The more secure you can be, with VPN, encryption, etc., the more expensive it is to surveil you. The more expensive it is, the less they do it. Ain't nothing perfect, but better is good enough.
This is awesome, thanks for sharing a method to improve security as well as save the money you could be paying for VPN! I agree with your perspective on this. Even if we can't be 100% secure, doing what you can is also important as it acts as a blatant statement that we do not consent! Raise your fist and resist!
It has been stated over and over that data is the currency of the future... stop giving yours away for free without a fight!
I am not super tech savvy but I will be trying my hand at this later.
Rolling your own vpn has certain advantages.. and the paramount of which is safety of your data. I remember few years ago, onion browser was under fire for leaking information of its users on dark web. So its always safe to create your own vpn..
I must be rather boring to the data gathers....I don't see much advertising geared towards me unless it's around Christmas and I comparison shop prices on items for presents online. Over three hundred million people in the US and anybody wants to spy on me I'll count it towards my fifteen minutes of fame....it's about all I am computer savvy enough to do anyway....lol.
Honestly, that's a better outcome than I've experienced. I am treating Steemit a little differently than other platforms. I hope not to generate some of the consequences I've faced in the past for my speech.
I hope this kind of information gets to folks that can limit the impact of their opposition on their speech and actions.
I spend a lot of time in a country that routinely censors and most probably intercepts internet traffic, not to mention blocking or slowing video calls back to my kids. I setup something very similar at home on a Raspberry Pi, so I can tunnel traffic through my home router back in Europe when I'm abroad. I've been using it for years almost without any issues, those things don't even use enough electricity to worry about.

I have had a look at substratum. It's a great idea, and if it wasn't competing with Steemit, I might delve more deeply. I like Steemit well enough.
All you say is true.
Thanks!

Wow!!
I always marvel at what tech-savy people can find, and I agree: A little bit goes a long way, step by step.

Thanks again @valued-customer!
I CANT TRUST ANYBODY..... GOD DAMNIT! RE-STEEMED!
Well, you stand on a wall, and people who are trying to get away with bad shit use you for a target.
Thanks for that.

I'm all for anyone who wants to do this. I also try to use alternative methods to access online content. The GFW in China often requires it.
However there is more to data privacy than just a VPN. Your browser can identify you quite easily, canvas fingerprinting is just one example.
My rule is to treat internet communication the same as a post card, assume it could be read by almost anyone at any time.

Odd. I distinctly remember getting a payout at least once before...
But thanks for the encouragement!
Sweet, thanks. I'm gonna talk this over with my tech type buddy and see what we can get going.
