Half Moon Bay 🌊 Home of Mavericks one of the most dangerous and biggest waves in the world

in #surf9 years ago (edited)

Half Moon Bay is a beautiful place. I recently had the pleasure of visiting this nice place. Among the atractions of the area is one of the biggest and most dangerous waves in the World, Mavericks.

This is how one of Maverick's waves looks like

It's crazy! (and very dangerous).

I had the pleasure of visiting Half Moon Bay and I saw Mavericks from the beach

What I mean is that I went to Half Moon Bay but Mavericks is a surfing location about 2 miles (3 km) from shore outside Pillar Point Harbor at Half Moon Bay. This super big waves come only during winter. During my visit I was only on the shore and there were no waves because it was not time yet but I had the pleasure of visiting the area and it is super beautiful.

I wish I would have been able to see those super big waves, even from a distance. But it wasn't time yet. Its all good. You have to be a professional surfer to go surf there and you have to have a caddie/friend in a jet ski to be picked up (rescued) after taking the wave because the conditions are so extreme (current, cold water, sharks, power of water) that you cannot surf alone there. You have to get there by boat. That wave is so big and so powerful that even if you do not surf it's worth to rent a boat and go there to see it from a closer distance. I wish I could have done that, only to see. But I guess next time I will do that.

Half Moon Bay, What a nice place

I posted another post showing how Half Moon Bay is also known for their pumpkins. Check it out, I posted very nice pics there as well.

When I arrived with some friends to the beach at Half Moon Bay, we parked the car in a very nice place in the coast and we hung around and had a beer checking out the sunset, ocean, birds, scenery and all the beautiful things this area has.

Pillar Point Air Force Station

On my pictures above, on the right side at the end of the coast, you can see Pillar Point Air Force Station whic is also a very cool place with some crazy antennas from the USA military.

These are nice videos where you can see more from the location, wave and how dangerous it is

Like I mentioned before, even if you do not surf at monster waves like these you can still take a boat and go near them (with an experienced boat captain of course) and you will feel how POWERFUL the ocean really is. I have been on a boat near big waves in Costa Rica and it's an awesome feeling, I can't even imagine how it feels to be near these monsters!

This place was definately one of my favorites from this trip, I can't wait to visit again 🌊

Wow sick .. it's like you got a truck falling down on you .. must be very painful to fell down from your board in those waves

yes, very painful from the videos and documentaries I have seen. Those guys wear an inflatable wet suits that inflate when they are underwater and it helps them go to surface faster. But they should not fight the wave/water while being underwater, that just wastes energy and could make them drown. They just have to allow the water to take them underwater and until that finishes they can go to surface again. If you fight the moving water you will drown. The arms and legs are moved all around and they even hit themselves with their own feet and hands from all that movement underwater. Thats why also they need to have a friend in a jetski so they pick them up and take them to safety rapidly before a monster wave lands on their head after resurfacing. If a monster wave lands on their head, the jetski cannot pick them up and they have to grab as mush air as possible and go underwater again to go under the monster wave. and after that the jetski can try again to pick them up. You have to be a VERY advanced surfer to go there and have a crew with you so you avoid having BIG problems.

Lol sounds like much trouble indeed =D
I'm happy watching them from the side haha
