Defeat is not defeat unless accepted as a reality-in your own mind

Yesterday I met a childhood friend I hadn't seen in 11 years since we both went to college for our undergrad studies. But I never imagined meeting him in a situation where I could see him but he couldn't see me. When I met him yesterday, I found that he had lost his vision.

He was a bright student in my class who I looked forward to seeing to clear up some of my doubts. In class 11th and 12th, he got admitted to an IIT-JEE coaching centre, where he consistently performed well. Although he did not qualify for JEE due to some reason, he was admitted to one of the best architectural institutes in the state.

As I learned from others, he did well at the institute also and was so good at drawing that most of the professors knew him personally and admired his abilities. But God had something else in store for him. He noticed blurriness in his vision at the end of his third year of studies. And it deteriorated so quickly in such a short period that he lost vision in both eyes within a month or so.

Yesterday, when his mother recounted how she is dealing with all of this, I could see tears in her eyes. She had tried everything she could think of to make good her son’s vision. They attended an acupuncture specialist in Delhi for 4 years but other than a few short moments of improved vision, it did nothing good. They have spent almost all of their savings on his treatment, but there have not been any positive results.

While his family is saving money for the last hope of stem cell treatment, I must admire my friend's determination and willpower. Despite losing everything for what he has worked for his entire life, he has not given up hope. He is studying for the UPSC exam, and his mother is assisting him by teaching him every day. His bravery exemplifies the adage, "Defeat is not defeat unless accepted as a reality in your own mind."

I pray to God to give him the strength to fight through all of this and emerge victorious. I continue to believe that a miracle will occur, and he will regain his lost vision. He is a hardworking and courageous person who will definitely achieve what he has set out to achieve in his life.
