Shazam Director Humorously Teases Superman Fight
07 Aug, 2017

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg has taken to Twitter once again to (lightheartedly) troll DC Extended Universe fans. Following the launch of Warner Bros.’ DC Comics shared universe last year with Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the DCEU continues with the Snyder’s Justice League this fall – featuring Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) – and then with James Wan’s Aquaman in December 2018.

Unfortunately, Aquaman remains the only DCEU movie releasing next year, but Shazam! hits theaters just a few months later in April 2019, which follows 10-year-old Billy Batson who has the capability of transforming into the superhero Shazam. Although there’s quite a bit that we don’t know about the movie yet, Sandberg has recently said that the movie will be one of the shared universe’s most lighthearted films, which makes sense considering the character and the source material. Aside from seeing Billy transform into Shazam on the big screen, one of the things that comic book fans would love to see is Shazam taking on the Man of Steel.

Sandberg has quickly established himself as the DCEU’s leading trickster, having teased and trolled franchise fans multiple times now, and it doesn’t look like he plans on stopping anytime soon. Today, he’s revealed a page from a fake Shazam! script on Twitter that teases a fight between Shazam and Superman, with the lone Kryptonian fearing the boy-turned-adult superhero. Take a look:

The fake script page teases multiple things associated with the character, such as Billy Batson transforming into Shazam by exclaiming the word, “Shazam!” He also comes close to referring to himself as Captain Marvel, who non-comic book readers may only associate with the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The thing is, though, Billy was the original Captain Marvel (when Fawcett Comics published the character), and due to Marvel copyrighting the name, DC Comics was forced to change their Captain Marvel to Shazam. Aside from that, it’s funny seeing how arrogant Billy acts as Shazam, and one fan already managed to draw up concept art for the highly-anticipated showdown between him and Superman. Take a look:

This isn’t the first time that Sandberg has joked about a fight between the two juggernaut superheroes. Last month, he jokingly mentioned that since Billy Batson doesn’t have a mother named Martha (a playful jab at Batman V Superman), once the “whoopin’ starts,” it doesn’t stop. Although some comic book fans would like to see the two DC staples fight against each other, just once, what people really want to know is who will be playing the titular characters: Billy Batson and Shazam. Seeing as Shazam! is scheduled to begin production next year, hopefully we won’t have to wait long to find out.
