SunThursday - Air Control Tower

in #sunthursday9 years ago (edited)

My neighborhood is built on land that used to be the old Austin airport. It closed in 1999 and was replaced by a much bigger airport on the outskirts of town. Despite the massive development that my neighborhood has seen, there are a few reminders of what this land used to be. The most noticeable, and coolest, is this air control tower built in the 1960's.

Badass view at sunset.

This tower was almost demolished along with everything else to build homes and businesses, but it was discovered that an endangered species of owl was nesting in the top. The owls are safe and still living there, and this tower has become an iconic symbol of the Mueller development.

Join in on the #sunthursday fun and post your pictures. Thanks to @uwelang for starting this and keeping it going strong.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. I'm glad they saved the Owls!

me too. They're hard to spot, but very cool, and I'm glad they can continue to live in rapidly developing Austin

Yes, it is fascinating to know they hold this building for saving the endangered species of owls! :)
