The Owl Sign from Germany

a few weeks ago we were in Dresden. We had the luck of a very sunny day where we went for a walk along the Elbe.
Then the sign with the owl on it came to my attention. I last saw this when I was a kid and went to Magdeburg for the first time to visit some friends. There was the owl near a lake.
This sign can only be seen in the former GDR. Was attentive and discovered it in other places through my travels the past weeks.

vor ein paar Wochen waren wir im Dresden. Wir hatten das Glück eines sehr sonnigen Tag wo wir spazieren gegangen sind entlang der Elbe.

At the beginning of the 50's two nature loving people named Kurt and Erna Kretschmann developed and introduced this symbol with some friends. It should mark the special trees, landscapes and plants.
They had attached over 5000 signs until 1954. At the time it was a huge effort. Their work has been rewarded, and in 1971 the symbol was adopted as an official symbol of nature conservation in the GDR.
The Kretschmanns have chosen the owl as a symbol to show that the owl is a special bird. It has always been thought that the owls are death bringers because at the dying always a candle burned over the night and the owls were attracted to the the light as being night birds and people saw them at the window.

Anfang der 50er zwei Natur liebende Menschen, namens Kurt und Erna Kretschmann haben mit ein paar Freunde diese Symbol entwickelt und eingeführt. Es sollte die besondere Bäume, Landschaften, Pflanzen kennzeichnen.
Sie hatten über 5000 Schilder angehängt bis 1954. Zu den Zeiten war das ein riesen Aufwand. Ihre Arbeit hat sich belohnt, und im Jahr 1971 wurde das Symbol als offizielles Zeichen für den Naturschutz in der DDR angenommen.
Die Kretschmanns haben die Eule als Symbol gewählt um zu zeigen das die Eule ein besonderes Vogel ist. Man hat früher immer gedacht das die Eulen Todes Bringer sind weil bei dem Sterbenden immer eine Kerze über die Nacht brannte und die Eulen als Nachtvogel immer von dem Licht angelockt worden sind und die Leute diese am Fenster sahen.
