Harmony of the Spheres - the Universe interpreted by Joep Franssens
Lately I'm trying different styles of music to support my mind to float to unearthly places, or in more common terms: to wind down from stress. The other day, when I let YouTube decide my journey, starting with Canto Ostinato, I ended up at this classical piece I started to put on repeat for a couple of times. A piece composed by the Dutch Joep Franssens, written for a mixed choir without any instruments...well, here and there violins are parts of the harmony! And of course, the singers form an instrument, a quite complex instrument all together.
...from his website, we can read...
Although Franssens’ multifaced musical style does not make it easy to classify him, he is often regarded as the Dutch representative of the so called New Spirituality in the Netherlands. In his music Franssens aims to express the Universal; his sources of inspiration are to be found amongst writers and philosophers like Fernando Pessoa and Baruch de Spinoza. In a rich tonal language his music evokes strong emotions by the public, both unacquainted with contemporary classical music as well as specialised listeners. In 2004 the recording of his major choral work Harmony of the Spheres reached the seventh rank of the classical charts in The Netherlands.
I didn't know about this guy, never heard his music, but this piece certainly made me bookmark him at Spotify and YouTube.
