Little aloes

Miniature aloe

Winter is flowering season for aloes and some of my bigger ones have already finished flowering although they didn't make much seed. I think this is because my cats are such avid hunters. I haven't seen them catch any sunbirds but I am sure that's not from lack of trying. The birds are smart enough to stay away. Although bees visit aloe flowers and collect pollen, it is the birds that pollinate the flowers. The shape of the flowers and the arrangement of the male and female parts of the flower make it impossible for bees to do the task. Of course there are exceptions to this rule but most aloes rely on birds.

This little aloe is about to flower, I am really excited to see what it will look like. This is a new plant and I hasn't bloomed before.

Look at the cute little teeth on this aloe seedling. I don't know what it is, the person I got it from said he thought it was Aloe marlothii which is a very big spectacular aloe species but it will be many years before it flowers.

Sort:

I love aloes. I have never seen any of this color really quite remarkable. The only color I have seen is green with white speckles.

Those are probably Aloe vera although it is also the sun that gives them colour, many succulents go greener in Northern climates

My grandmother at home grew scarlet. The juice of these flowers she used as a medicine. In those years, we had very difficult times in our country.

Which years were those: 1950s?

I didn't know they use birds as pollinators! I have one aloe that never bloomes. It's "mother" did though. But it was getting to big and I had to give it away.
Love the last little one :)

Some aloes are very long-lived and will not bloom for the first time for many years. Some only bloom for the first time after 25 years. If mother was getting big, it may be one of those

I think I got the mother as a small plant (relatively small) and it did bloom after 2 years maybe..
I have no idea what type of aloe it is. It normally grows around gardens here. I cant cen remember if it has yellow or red flowers.
Could be something like that, but a bit smaller.

Those kinds of aloes are very much garden-sized plants. Too much for a balcony

Yea... it is not a small one. Might be needing a bigger pot. Maybe that's why it doesn't bloom ;p

Beautiful pictures!
I like Aloe.

Thank you! My mother also loves aloes and her cousin is a horticulturist who breeds them so there have always been aloes around in my life

We also had Aloe at home all the time. My grandmother treated us for colds.
And till now, I have Aloe all the time and my friends have too. We continue to be treated when we catch a cold.

Which part do you use to treat colds? Here, aloe is mainly used as a purgative or to treat some skin conditions

Take a sheet of aloe washed well.
Cut the sides of the leaf spines and then squeeze out the juice.

1 tablespoon of aloe juice (age of Aloe is not less than 2 years)
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon butter (melted, but not warmed!)
All this mix well.
Before going to bed, slowly eat 1 teaspoon of this mixture.
And until the morning do not drink anything!
Put the remaining mixture in the refrigerator.
Continue until the throat ceases to hurt.
Checked by years - works!

Is that Aloe Vera or do you use any kind of aloe?

Beautiful, we have the first one at our front door, in a pot. I haven't seen the bottom one before.

I like all of them, but the first one seems to me the most special.
And I have very similar Aloe as the one from your last photo.
I will have to make some photos of my Aloas, maybe you will have something to tell, to help me find right ID for some of them.

I can try. I also really like that little one in the first picture

The aloe's mucus is good for the first aid of scorch...
