The other day while driving past Echo Park Lake and the Clinton Street Stairway, something caught my eye. As it turns out it was a fresh installation, "Claude Monet in Echo Park," by a street artist collective know as Decisions and Review. I wasn't initially aware that this street-level piece was also beckoning those willing to follow, to further discovery.

One of the lesser-known landmarks of Los Angeles are it's hidden staircases. In the 1920's city planners and developers installed these as pedestrian accessways down the steep hills to schools, businesses, and transportation below. Built at a time when more people used trolleys than automobiles these stairs lace the hillsides of certain L.A. neighborhoods.

I climbed the stairs out of curiosity and was quickly rewarded with a bewildered bunny and sad, sad TV peering down at me.

Best when viewed at full size.
The contrast between these cartoonish characters and the decaying public infrastructure was striking.

Another fun part of the installation was the unexpected discovery. Hidden on a center landing the piece is hidden from street view until you happen upon it.

It appears the Bewildered Bunny is a trending favorite and the artist collective.
