From StreetScape to Skyline … Singapore – Street Photography

This shows a typical Singapore street scene, with an informal blend of buildings old and new, low-rise and high-rise.

Work from home, trad style

In the foreground, we see the old, traditional, but well-maintained “shophouses” which are a common feature of many cities in Southeast Asia. A shophouse is a 2–3-story high, mixed-use building. The bottom floor comprises a shop, while the upper floors are the residence for the shop owners.   

Market value reflects historic value

In Singapore nowadays, most people live in more modern homes, and few people reside in these shophouses.

Nevertheless, most of these shophouses remain, and have been refurbished. As a result, their “historical”  value has surpassed their value as a shop or a home, and these buildings now command high prices.    

The skyscrapers reflect Singapore’s growth over the past few decades – primarily upwards. Most of the people now live in high-rise apartments and condos. But the shophouses remain, reflecting the city’s historical and geographic heritage.    Location – Singapore, seen from Chinatown Complex, on Google Maps
