Japanese Granny Panties

In Japan it is customary to give your grandmother red underwear when she turns 60 years old. The reason they do this is because it is supposed to bring good health to the wearer. The location I took these photo’s at was in Sugamo on the Jizō Dori street. This street is well known as the old ladies Harajuku because it is a popular fashion spot for the elderly to shop. The crowd consisted mostly of men and women over the age of fifty, but I did see a few tourists, and a younger crowd who were visiting the shrine. I was pretty surprised to see that the concentration of people in Sugamo were walking down this street. When you visit Sugamo it doesn’t seem like much until you walk to the Jizō Dori street. I really didn’t see anything that I would wear but I did see many things that I would have eaten. Sometimes Sugamo has many street venders selling different kinds of food. I myself am a sucker for street vender food. Maybe it’s because you can’t find those types of foods in a restaurant.

This is what most of the shops look like. I am pretty sure they all sell the same things but prices might be different.

Japanese women are well known for being the longest living women in the world. Maybe it might be because of these red panties. If you stop by don’t forget to bring back some luck to your grandmother back at home with a pair of red panties.
