Because of this post I will add a herald to my adventure xD
The only purpose will be to give out some more information about the upcoming dark times (an invasion) and I think the herald will be a simple peasant with some kind of cryptic visions.
These kind of actions are great to prepare the adventurers for their next bigger quests and to build up a little bit of tension if it is a bit too relaxed.

What I find is really useful with heralds is to give a fulcrum for the plot. It's really easy to under-do plot points when you're running games and have players go to the far corners of the earth, and having a really good idea of who has the main problem you want the players to solve is important. It also requires some deliberate presentation.

I've always had problems with this when running Shadowrun or other games where the players are very mercenary.
