আমাদের গ্রামের পাশ দিয়ে একটি কাঁচা সড়ক সরাসরি যুক্ত ছিল ফরিদপুর থানার সাথে। সড়কটা ছিল ৩টি গ্রামের কৃষকদের কৃষি জমির মাঝ বরাবর। ১৯৭১ সালে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের কোন এক সময় পাকিস্তানী সৈনিকদের একটি ছোট বাহিনী সেই রাস্তা দিয়ে গ্রামে প্রবেশ করার চেষ্টা চালিয়ে ছিল। কিন্তু আমাদের গ্রামের সাথে রাস্তাটির সংযোগ সড়কের একটা অংশ কাটা থাকায় তারা গ্রামে প্রবেশ করতে ব্যর্থ হয়। তারা সড়ক বরাবর থানার দিকে এগিয়ে যায় এবং স্বল্প সময়েও তাদের হত্যাযজ্ঞ চালিয়ে যায়। মৃতের সঠিক সংখ্যা কেউ বলতে পারে নি। কারন পাকিস্তানী সৈন্যরা হত্যা শেষে লাশগুলো রাস্তার পাশে একটা গভীর কুয়ার মধ্যে ফেলে দিয়ে যায়। কুয়োটা ছিল একটা হিজল গাছের পাশে। সেই হিজল গাছের আশেপাশের ২/৩ মাইল শুধুই কৃষি জমি। কোন বাড়ি ঘর নেই। সেই কুয়োর কোন নিশানা আজ পাওয়া না গেলেও হিজল গাছটা ঠিকই সাক্ষী হয়ে আছে সেই নৃশংস হত্যাযজ্ঞের। এই হিজল গাছ আর কুয়ো নিয়ে অনেক গল্প চালু রয়েছে গ্রামে। রাতের বেলা অনেকেই নাকি এই গাছের পাশ দিয়ে যাবার সময় "পানি, পানি" বলে আর্তনাদ করতে শুনেছে। আজও নাকি হিজল গাছের পাশ দিয়ে আসার সময় মানুষ পথ হাড়িয়ে ফেলে। হিজল গাছ থেকে গ্রামের দুরত্ব আধা মাইলের মত। ফরিদপুর থেকে রাতের বেলা বাড়ি ফেরার সময় আশরীর কণ্ঠ শুনেছে এমন অনেক মানুষের দেখা পাওয়া যায় গ্রামে। এমনকি রাতের বেলা গ্রামে ফিরতে গিয়ে আধা মাইল পথ সারা রাতেও পার হতে পারে নি, এমন মানুষও কম নেই গ্রামে।
বেতুয়ান গ্রামের পাশের গ্রাম রামনগর। রামনগর গ্রামের আক্কাস নামের এক লোক তার ছাগল হারিয়ে ফেলেছে। সারা দুপুর ছাগল খোজা-খুজির পর বিকেলে সে জানতে পারল তার ছাগল বেতুয়ানের সীমান্তে ঢুকে একজন কৃষকের সবজির ক্ষেত নষ্ট করছিল, তাই বেতুয়ানের চকপহরি (গ্রামে জমি পাহারা দেওয়ার জন্য নিয়জিত প্রতিরক্ষা বাহিনী) তার ছাগল ধরে নিয় গেছে। ঘটনা শুনে রাগে ক্ষোভে কোন কিছু না ভেবেই বেচারা রওনা দিল বেতুয়ানের দিকে। তখন মাগরিবের আযান হয়ে গেছে।
রাগের মাথায় রওনা দিলেও একসময় আক্কাস মিয়ার হঠাৎ করেই মনে পরে গেল হিজল গাছের কথা। আরে সামনেই তো হিজল গাছ! ঐ-তো দেখা যাচ্ছে। সাথে সাথে তার সমস্ত শরীরে কাঁটা দিয়ে উঠল। আক্কাস মিয়া আর সামনের দিকে অগ্রসর হল না। কারণ ছাগলের চাইতে জীবন অনেক বড়। ছাগল তো কালকেও আনা যাবে। কিন্তু জীবন…ভয়ে তিনি বাড়ি ফিরে যাবার জন্য যেই পা বাড়াবেন ঠিক তখনি তার মনে হল কেউ একজন তাকে ডাকছে।
-ভাই কি বেতুয়ান যাবেন?
আক্কাস মিয়া চমকে উঠে জোর গলায় বলল,
-কেডা আপনে?
-ভাই আমি মোক্তার। আমার বাড়ি বেতুয়ানের শেষ মাতায়। ঐ ইজল গাছের থেনে মাইল খানিক ফাঁকে। আপ্নের বাড়ি কোনে?

-ঐ চিনত্যাতেই তো ভাই একা জাসসিন্যা। গেছিল্যাম আপ্নেগরে গাওয়ের হাঁটে। ফিরতি ফিরতি বেলা গরা আইলো। এহন একা যাতি ক্যাবা জানি লাগতেছে। তারচে চলেন ভাই আমার বাড়িত যাই। রাইত খান থাইকা কাইলকা বরহি(ছাগল) লিয়্যা বাড়ি জায়েন্নে।
আক্কাস মিয়া দেখল প্রস্তাবটা খারাপ না। তাছাড়া আকাশে মেঘও করেছে। এই অবস্থায় বাড়ি ফিরে যাওয়া ও ঝামেলা। তাই সে আর কথা না বাড়িয়ে লোকটার সাথে রওনা দিলো।
দুজনে গল্প করতে করতে এক সময় হিজল গাছের প্রায় কাছে চলে এলো। এমন সময় হঠাৎ করেই মোক্তার নামের লোকটা কাঁদার মধ্যে পরে গেল। সাথে সাথে আক্কাস মোক্তারকে হাত ধরে তুলতে গিয়ে চমকে উঠল। একি, এই লোকটার হাত এতো ঠাণ্ডা কেন? মানুষের শরীর কি এতো ঠাণ্ডা হয়?
মোক্তার আস্তে করে উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে বলল,

কথাটা বলেই মোক্তার আক্কাসের উত্তরের অপেক্ষা না করেই কুয়োর দিকে পা বাড়াল। আক্কাসের শরীরে ভয়ের শীতল স্রোত বয়ে গেল। কুয়োটা অনেক দিন আগে থেকেই পরিত্যক্ত। সেখানে পানি আসবে কোথা থেকে? হঠাৎ আকাশে বিদ্যুৎ চমকে উঠল। বিদ্যুতের আলোতে আক্কাস স্পষ্ট দেখতে পেল, মোক্তারের পা নেই।
সারা শরীর কেমন জানি একটা ঝাঁকি দিয়ে উঠল আক্কাসের। তাহলে মোক্তার মানুষ না! আবার এতো রাতে তাকে কুয়োর দিকে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে; তার মানে কি সে আইষ্ঠাখোর ভূত!
আক্কাস আর এক মুহূর্তও দেরি করল না। সোজা মাটির উপর চোখ বুজে টানটান হয়ে শুয়ে পড়ল। (গ্রামে কথিত আছে, ভূত বা খারাপ আত্মা মাটি স্পর্শ করতে পারেনা। তাদের ক্ষমতা মাটির একহাত উপরে) কিছুক্ষণ পর আক্কাস শুনতে পেলো কেউ একজন ন্যাকা সুরে আক্কাসকে উদ্দেশ্য করে বলছে, "কুত্তার বাচ্চা বাইছা গেলু। মাটির উপর না শুলি আজক্যা তোক কুয়োর মদ্দি গাইরা থুল্যামনে।"
ঠিক এভাবেই পরের দিন সকাল পর্যন্ত মাটির উপর শুয়েছিল আক্কাস মিয়াঁ। হয়তো আজও রাতের বেলা কোন মানুষ সেই আধা মাইল পথ পার হতে পারেনি।।
