"Ashes to Ashes" - A Story in 50 Words
The house was empty. He knew the family's schedule better than his own but he'd checked anyway. They didn't know it but the walls were evil, the kind you couldn't exorcise or pray away. He'd burn the whole thing down. They wouldn't thank him but it wasn't about the praise.
This one's a little dark. I'm curious, do you think the guy's crazy or does he know something most people don't? The way the story was written it could really go either way. Maybe he sees things that can't be explained, maybe he needs psychiatric help. Either way, feel free to drop your opinion in the comments.

Maybe he is crazy or maybe he isn't. Either way, I'm sure he has a good heart (since he waited for the house to be completely empty). Could it be that he has a past history with the house. Maybe he lost his family in that house under strange and inexplicable circumstances? (Maybe we are going to find out in another story).
That's a lot like how I imagined it actually! He's a troubled guy because of what he's survived and what he's lost but he's not wrong about the house. I doubt I'll continue the story any time soon though.

My most favoured scenario is one where the house is sad and dilapidated and just wants to die. So much so, that it becomes sentient and psychic. Somewhat psychic as it could only communicate within a very specific metaphysical orientation. The arsonist was the only individual in the world who was compatible with the house's transmission. This connection does not respect physical distance, so the arsonist, being many miles away, responded to the call. He studied the house and found the perfect timing to grant its wish.
