The sun was unrelenting on his back, sweat trickled from his nape and drenched his shirt. Time ceased to matter, he didn't know how long had he been standing there, ten minutes, an hour or two. His right hand grew numb from clutching a necklace too hard for too long. Courage was what he lacked, just two more steps and a knock would end his misery but his feet wouldn't budge.

Once upon a time, in a whim and with a wish on a shooting star, he left. In a hurry he wrote a note and left in the middle of the night. He knew if he waited until morning that logic would win over dreams. His journey wasn't the one he imagined, there were no adventures but misfortunes and failure. He stuck to it until he couldn't, all he had left were the clothes in his back and the necklace in his hand. It was this necklace, given to him by a woman on a fair, that reminded him of her mother and how he longed to see her. A simple leather string with a blue gemstone; blue like her eyes, it was rough around the edges and beautiful inside. Five years had turned into an eternity and now it was time he came home. But knowing the pain he caused was for nothing, for instead of fulfillment all he felt was hollow, he couldn't bring himself to knock. Five years with no communication other than a couple of letters he sent without giving his address.

The sun gave up on forcing him to enter and the moon took its turn; shivers wracked his body, the sweat making the air colder. People gave him a wide berth and stinky eyes. A few considered calling the police but saw that he meant no harm. And the inhabitants of the house continued to live their routine, unaware of the man standing outside their house.

When the brunette's teeth started chattering, he knew time was running out. Looking to the skies, asking for courage, a shooting star passed. He closed his eyes and wished for his mom's lasagna and sleeping on his warm bed. Leaving the shame that filled him he took the two steps and knocked. A minute later a woman opened the door, but he didn't know her. His gut lurched, somehow he knew something wasn't right. After asking for his family, the lady told him that they had moved out a couple of years ago. The news brought tears to his eyes and despair took hold of his heart. Despite his best efforts some tears leaked and ran down his cheeks. Seeing that, the woman signaled for him to wait a minute and disappeared inside the house. When she came back, a letter was in her hand and he recognized his mom's writing. A smile formed and with a 'thank you' he took it and left. Hope was born and it fought despair, who admitted defeat and grudgingly left his heart for not all was lost.
