In China, there was a one child policy for a few generations for population control. There was a strong gender bias towards males as they carried the family name. Atrocities such as abandoning baby girls were a common practice. ༼✿ @sweetsssj

It's improving, now the one child policy is abolished for the most part. People are allowed to have two children if they themselves have no siblings. Of course, other gender equality issues are still far from ideal but that is not a problem unique to China..
