The mysterious death of the poet’s wife

in #story4 years ago

The house-museum of Peyo Yavorov in Sofia is located on the famous "theater" street "G.S. Rakovsky" 136. The famous Bulgarian poet Peyo Yavorov rented the second floor of this house with his wife from 1912 until his death in 1913.

The poet himself comes from the Bulgarian town of Chirpan - a large museum is also built in his native house, dedicated not only to the life, but also to the work of the poet.

We were only in this apartment of his. This place became a museum in 1963, the decor and personal belongings of P. Yavorov — photographs, his first autographed editions, and weapons collection — were preserved here.
Entrance to the museum cost 3 levs (1.5 euros), for students and children 2 leva (1 euros), a full tour from 5 to 10 leva, and on Thursdays admission is free.
The museum is open every day except weekends from ten in the morning until five in the evening, on a free day - from one in the afternoon.

Yavorov is a pseudonym, the real name of the poet Peyo Totev Kracholov. He was born on January 1, 1878 in the city of Chirpan. He published his first poem in 1895, it was called "Forward" (Forward). He worked as a telegraph operator and librarian, sympathized with the Bulgarian revolutionaries, was friends and was a biographer of the famous Bulgarian politician Gotse Delchev. After his death, Yavorov was depressed for a long time and left politics. The death of a friend and associate was his second shock in life after he was forced to drop out of school in order to earn a living. Yavorov was considered the owner of a subtle spiritual constitution, was known as a great romantic and ladies man. Apparently that's why he got the lyric works so well.

P. Yavorov was in love with the famous poetess Dora Gabe, but the relationship did not work out, because she went to his friend.

For many years he had hopelessly loved Mina Todorova, who was twice his age and whose parents were categorically against their relationship. During this period, Yavorov wrote many beautiful poems. Mina died in France from consumption. Peyo Yavorov was very upset by her death.

Two years after the death of Mina, Yavorov married Laura Karavelova, a woman who had loved him for many years, but whom he himself apparently did not like, for he gave her many reasons for jealousy. Laura Karavelova was the daughter and niece of very famous Bulgarian figures, therefore, after her mysterious death, the investigation and the proceedings went on for a whole year. Yavorov could not stand this pressure and after drinking the poison, shot himself. This happened on October 29, 1914.

And the year before, on November 30, 1913, the owners of the apartment, running to the rumble of gunfire, found dead Laura and the blinded P. Yavorov. The poet claimed that Laura shot herself, and he wanted to commit suicide, but survived, but was blind as a result of his injuries. Bulgarian historians and literary scholars still consider the whole story ominously mysterious.

From 1908 until his death, Yavorov served as a playwright at the Bulgarian National Theater. He lived only 36 years.

All these autumn photos were taken by me personally.

An interesting museum to visit. The tour and the information you provide are very valuable. It is an excellent job to promote not only a museum but a great theater artist in Bulgaria. Thank you for sharing your interest in this place @varya-davydova

I am always fascinated to see how artists of the past lived. So many have storied lives, filled with sordid details and tempestuous trauma. (Maybe that is why they write or paint or compose so well!) This home seems so very regular and normal, and yet, who knows what the true story is about what happened there. Thank you for bringing this interesting story in this corner of the world to light @varya-davydova 🌱
