The Untalented Talking Drummer

We were still seated on white plastic chairs waiting for our friend when the talking drummers came in. The drummers were local musicians from nearby villages. They played during convocation ceremonies to students that were graduating, this service is unsolicited and very annoying.

They played in different rhythms and styles. They were many of them. Whenever students were organizing convocation parties, they would come to play with the hopes of getting tips from the guests.

The talking drum is an hourglass-shaped drum covered with leather on both ends and suspended from the armpit with one arm. The other hand is used to hit the drum with a special stick. It's a very special drum and can be used to produce the most sensational and scintillating sounds. The village drummers however found a way to make this wonderful musical instrument to be an instrument of cacophony.

There was one talking drummer who stood out because of his utter lack of skill. He is the worse talking drummer in the universe. If you are reading this and you don't know what a talking drum is, I bet you would be able to play better than him.

This drummer played with such lack of skill but he was so determined to make some money that I admired him and disliked him at the same time. I was filled with indignation at first because he was such a bother but then a part of me felt for him. He lacked a lot of things besides skills. He lacked proper education and the right environment. He was an old man, he probably has a family that needs him to provide. I admired his blind determination, sheer audacity and hope.

I learned some things from this drummer. Life is hard. We live in a dog eat dog world where few people actually care and sometimes you just have to put yourself out there and do things. Even when nobody (including your honest self) gives you a nod of approval just go ahead and do what you want to do. Suck at it. Do it scared, do it tired, but do it anyway.
