The Halcyon Hotel-%100 SP
Hello Steemian you may know of the Halcyon its a British television drama which was broadcasted on ITV it started airing on the 2 of January 2017.
What was it?
The series was created and written by Charlotte Jones who is a British actress and playwriter.
The Halcyon was a eight part drama series about a bustling and glamorous grand hotel in wartime London.
The drama was set in the 1940s it showed Londons life throughout the war including the impact it had on families, politics, relationships and work.
For example the Lord Hamilton returns to the hotel just as scandals threatens to engulf it, but the series also bought a soundtrack from such a era with multi award winning singer songwriter Jamie Cullum which made many interested in music from such time reviving it.
Performed by Beverley Knight, from The Halcyon
Episode 1
Just quickly looking over not even half of episode 1 it starts with an American arriving in town and making his way to the Halcyon Hotel in the hard rain.
Meanwhile at the Halcyon the manager Richard Garland and concierge are grouped outside to welcome back the Lord Hamilton who happens to be the owner.
Back in the hotel the manager registers them but with some surprise additions a young new blonde companion of the lord called Charity Lambert, what will the lords wife make of her?
As they enter they are also followed by several other mystery men which all seem very upper class and white haired.
With it making a scene of itself the American Joe O’Hara checks in and immediately starts asking questions about the them coming in earlier.
It’s clear that he senses some sort of traitor as Lord Hamilton kicks off some sort of secret closed meeting it become apparent to why sneaking in the back of the hotel was necessary as Lords, MPs and influencers are plotting how to instate Halifax as PM…but it’s clear that the room contains more than its fair share of appeasers and Nazi sympathisers.
There was also a few light sexual scenes and some nudity in the series.
The programme received mixed responses from critics and despite the fact the series finale pulled in 5.18 million viewers this was short of two million from the first episode.
Some would be shocked by this or think its a bad result but from what I haven seen its normal, I know one reason alot of people stopped watching for is because of the main characters being killed so early during the series.
I did enjoy the series and I know of fans who did but unfortunately there was bad news for those who enjoyed it
as ITV announced that they won’t be making a second series.
This caused some commotion online as there seemed to have been many people upset and strangely more the usual.
Which brings me to the question was ITV right to axe it? Or should the Halycon hotel be given another series?
Let me know below by voting.
As the commotion was happening ITV decided it would release a statement explaining their decision.
They started by thanking the Halcyon production team and their actors at Left Bank Pictures for their hard work.
They explained that on certain occasions they have to take tough calls and that not all drama series's can be recommissioned. They mentioned that they were very pleased that so many people enjoyed Halcyon.
But it seems the decision was made as ITV say they regularly have to consider the range of dramas they commission to ensure there is a right balance and range.
The Halcyon Opening
Not enough period drama and too many cookery and reality programmes!
Wish they would keep this and not the reality shows.
I really thought it had lots of potential but it was squandered on a lack of good scripting and plotlines.
Britain standing alone the life and times of a grand hotel as war rages was inspiring.
