What is the first image that comes your mind about Japan? It will be many images. I think kimono is the one of the images that comes out first.

Japan is really hot and humid in Summer, and cold in winter. Kimono is the clothes that well developed for Japanese weather, and also for the Japanese characteristic small body.

If you visit Japan, you may notice the Japanese wear kimono a lot. Especially in graduation ceremonies and adult ceremonies, or in the New Year season you could easily find the people walking around wearing kimono regardless of age or gender.

Few years ago, I went to spa trip with my family to Japan. In the spa, my mother and grandmother asked me that they should wear underwear under the Yukata which is Japanese traditional summer costumes. You might get confused too when you visiting Japan first time and try to wear Yukata. There is no rule for the correct answer, but recently it was etiquette to wear underwear and it would be good for your hygienic.

In the past, Japanese people wear a kimono as an ordinary clothes, but Japanese usually didn't wear underwear under the kimono.

However, there was a big incident that Japanese people began wearing underwear under the kimono.

In 1925, a large fire accident occurred at the Shirokiya Department Store in Japan (today's Tokyu Department Store), a number of royal women are injured.

Why were they injured? Because of the fire? Nope.

The reason is they refused to be rescued by a ladder, because they didn’t wear underwear so if you ride a ladder, people will see their naked body from the bottom so they choose to die rather than feel the shame.

This incident was a big problem in the society and there was a campaign for wear underwear after that incident. The world-famous underwear brand ' Wacoal' was started at that time.

Acually my Japanese teacher told me about this sotry while ago and I thought it's really interesting. What do you think about this story? Japanese culture is a lot different with Korean culture, that's why I love to study Japanese culture. Hope you enjoyed my post. Thanks!

여러분은 일본하면 어떠한 이미지가 가장 먼저 떠오르시나요? 여러가지 이미지가 있을텐데요, 그 중에서도 많은 분들이 기모노를 떠오르셨을거 같아요. 일본의 여름은 정말 덥고 습하고, 겨울은 춥기로 유명합니다. 기모노는 이러한 일본의 기후 그리고 일본인 특유의 작은 체격의 결함을 보충하기 위한 수단으로 개발된 옷이라고 합니다.

일본에 방문하신 분들은 많이 보셨겠지만, 일본인들은 일상생활속에서도 기모노를 정말 많이 입습니다. 특히 졸업식이나 성인식 혹은 새해 시즌에는 남녀노소 불문하고 기모노를 입고 돌아다니는 분들을 정말 많이 볼 수 있어요. 이런점은 정말 부럽더라구요, 우리나라 한복도 기모노 못지 않게 아름다운데ㅜㅜ!! 우리도 생활속에서 한복을 더 많이 입었으면 좋겠네요^^

일본의 온천에서는 주로 기모노의 미니버젼인 유카타라는 여름용 일본 전통의상을 입습니다. 제가 가족들과 일본 온천에 놀러갔을때 어머니와 할머니께서 아래 속옷을 입어야 하는지 물어보시더라구요. 아마도 일본에 가셔서 처음 유카타를 입어보시는 분이라면 다들 한번쯤은 고민을 해보셨을거라고 생각해요. 정답은~! 정해진 룰은 없지만 요즘에는 속옷을 착용하시는것이 에티켓이기도 하고 본인에게 위생적으로도 좋기 때문에 착용하시는 편이 좋습니다.

과거에는 일본인들이 기모노를 평상복으로 많이 입었었죠, 그렇지만 그당시엔 보통 기모노 아래 속옷을 입지 않았다고 합니다. 일본인들이 기모노 아래 속옷을 입기 시작한 큰 사건이 있었어요.

1925년 일본의 시로키야 백화점(지금의 도큐백화점)에서 큰 화재 사고가 발생하게 되는데, 이때 다수의 왕실 여성들이 부상을 입게 됩니다. 이들이 왜 부상을 입게 되었을까요? 화재때문에? 아닙니다.

바로, 사다리로 구조되는것을 거부했기 때문입니다. 구조용 사다리를 탈 경우 밑에서 바라보는 시민들에게 적나라하게 들어난 자신의 몸을 보이게 될 것이라고 생각한 여성들이, 그런 수치심을 느끼느니 차라리 목숨을 끊는 선택을 하게 된 것이죠.

이사건은 사회적으로 큰 이슈가 되었고, 속옷입기 운동등으로 이어졌습니다. 이때 탄생한 회사가 바로 세계적으로 유명한 속옷 브랜드 ‘와코루’죠! 이사건을 계기로 와코루 뿐만아니라 유명 속옷브랜드들이 많이 생겼다고 해요^^ 재미있지 않나요?

이 이야기는 저의 일본어 선생님이 오래전에 해주신 이야기인데요, 일본은 우리나라와 가깝지만 문화는 정말 다른것 같죠? 그래서 더 재미있는 일본 문화이야기 였습니다.
