Like before the election
everyone knows,
The emperor is a fool
and has no clothes.
The speeches, the marches and paid-for parades,
the despots, bureaucracy and monarchs that reign,
whistle the anthems that everyone knows,
like praying in public, sans any clothes.
Listening closely it sounds just the same;
they promise us hope but leave us estranged,
they campaign on tropes with victims to blame,
but no one can say they do not bring change.
Repeating through history
everyone knows,
The emperor is a fool
and has no clothes.
Mind you the barricades, the avenue's lined,
and if you have children avert their small eyes,
for surely, it seems, it would make them all sick
to gaze on the emperor's naked, small... hands.
When the speeches and theater are finally done,
and the popping hiss of battle has begun,
and the stoners are sparking up on the lawn,
the pacifists will sing a more violent song.
They will all sing out loudly
Everyone knows!
