The Simpsons was crafted as adult comedy. The idea of yellow characters was so that anyone walking past a TV would get the unconscious message of the Simpsons as a marketing ploy.
Springfield was chosen since that township occurs in every 50 American States, thus people could always 'identify' with that local group being just up the road . . .
The longest running show B4 the Simpsons was the Flintstones, it was unsure if there would be further simpsons episodes from Season 24 due to pay disputes. The actors wanted 450,ooo US$ per episode, an episode usually takes a long WEEK of work for these voice actors; especially those who do multi characters.
This dispute was settled and everyone got more rich than they already were : )
