Barcos Fantasmas
Buques que deambulen sin que nadie los tripule, muerte y maldiciones; la tradición náutica es uno de los más prolíficos semilleros de misterios.
Se cuenta que, en el año 1872, el capitán Benjamin Briggs ordenó a su tripulación levar anclas y fijar el curso hacia Génova, Italia. Acompañado por su esposa Sara, su pequeña hija Sophie de dos años y siete marinos, pertieron de Nueva York, EUA, a bordo del bergantín Mary Celeste. En este momento nadie sabía que su viaje constituiría uno de los enigmas más recordados del folclor marítimo. Todo marchaba de acuerdo a lo estipulado, teniendo un recorrido relativamente tranquilo a través del Atlántico. El 25 de noviembre el Mary Celeste tocó tierra en las Azores, un archipiélago portugués a 1,500 Km de Lisboa, para luego retomar su ruta hacia Génova, Italia. Pero la nave y sus viajeros nunca llegaron a su destino. Inexplicablemente en los primeros días de diciembre el barco apareció navegando sin rumbo en medio del océano. Una embarcación, el Dei Gratia, también salido de Nueva York, lo avistó y se acercó a investigar. Grande fue la sorpresa al no encontrar a nadie en cubierta. Tras suponer lo peor, abordaron y comenzaron a buscar a los tripulantes. Exploraron rápidamente el barco de 30 metros de largo; cabinas, cocina, cabina de mando, pero no había rastro de ninguno de ellos. Nadie de los 10 pasajeros, no había indicios de pelea o de algún ataque pirata; en cambio se encontraron con ropa tendida, las pertenencias de los navegantes, té aún caliente servido y su carga completa , alrededor de 1700 barriles de alcohol industrial, junto con las provisiones para seis meses.
Así como esta embarcación, existen muchas otras, solo por mencionar algunas: Lady Lovibond, la leyenda del Octavius, el Caleuche, Resolven, Baychimo, Teinmouth Electron, Jian Seng. Lo cierto es, que cada año cientos de embarcaciones sucumben ante las adversidades del océano o se extravían en su inmensidad. Dando pie a diferentes teorías; desde monstruos marinos, complots y motines, piratería e incluso abducciones extraterrestres son entre muchas posibles explicaciones de lo que ocurrió en cada caso.

Accompanied by his wife Sara, his little daughter Sophie of two years and seven sailors, they arrived from New York, USA, aboard the brig Mary Celeste. At this time no one knew that his trip would be one of the most remembered enigmas of maritime folklore. Everything was going according to the stipulations, having a relatively calm route across the Atlantic. On November 25, the Mary Celeste made landfall in the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago 1,500 km from Lisbon, before returning to Genoa, Italy. But the ship and its travelers never reached their destination. Inexplicably in the first days of December the ship appeared sailing aimlessly in the middle of the ocean. A boat, the Dei Gratia, also left New York, sighted it and approached to investigate. Great was the surprise to not find anyone on deck. After assuming the worst, they boarded and began looking for the crew. They quickly scanned the 30-meter long boat; cabins, kitchen, cockpit, but there was no trace of any of them. No one of the 10 passengers, there were no signs of a fight or a pirate attack; instead they found clothes hanging, the belongings of the navigators, tea still hot served and its full load, around 1700 barrels of industrial alcohol, along with provisions for six months.
As well as this boat, there are many others, just to mention a few: Lady Lovibond, the legend of the Octavius, the Caleuche, Resolven, Baychimo, Teinmouth Electron, Jian Seng. The truth is that every year hundreds of boats succumb to the adversities of the ocean or get lost in its immensity. Giving rise to different theories; from marine monsters, plots and mutinies, piracy and even extraterrestrial abductions are among many possible explanations of what happened in each case.
