LONGWOOD ESTATE \ circa 1790
Longwood estate, originally part of "William Tangier Smith's 1655-1705" vast property holding in what is now Brookhaven Town, Suffolk County L.I. NY.
After the revolutionary war Smith's son Judge William Smith 1720-1799, built a home for his son "General" John Smith 1756-1816. Great grandson of W. Tangier Smith, at "Longwood". At that time it was called "Long Swamp," due to the large swamp to the north that formed the headwaters of the "Peconic River'.
It gets confusing with all the "Smith" generations. But their history is very intriguing, with happy and sad stories.
The Longwood estate has been in Smith family from 1790 to 1968....It is now preserved by Brookhaven town along with the surrounding 35 acres.

Wow, that's cool. Thanks.
Your welcome.
Quite stately. Nice rolling land.
Back of house there is a "kettle hole" pond. That went dry this year.
it was quit nice when full of water.
Yeah our lake has 15 feet of dry ground in front of the seawall that is usually underwater!
Thank you very much for sharing inspiring content.
Beautiful house. Can you imagine how beautiful this house looked to others way back when it was built? Great post.
I am going back and take pictures of the inside. Got there to late this time. But had the run of the whole grounds to myself.
Can't wait to see the inside.
May go tomorrow.
