LAST MAN IN THE TOWER BY ARAVIND ADIGA

in #story7 years ago

BeautyPlus_20171219014538_save.jpgVishram society towers A and B are 50 years old. B is dilapidated and crumbling but both located in the heart of Mumbai. Tower B is plagued by poor water supply owing to the ineffectiveness of the Secretary.
Shah, a ruthless property developer offers the upper class tenants in A and middle class tenants in tower B a mouth-watering sum to enable them move out of the building and give him the chance to build a high rise building which would decorate the bustling city of Mumbai.

Yogesh Murthi, a retired teacher known as Masterji refused to yield to this tempting deal and with some of the tenants hinging their decisions on his, trouble loomed and tower B posed serious challenge to Shah’s plans.
What makes this book spectacular is the clusters of characters that practically mirrored reality. It brings to mind the many pains the poor and middle class face during economic expansions in our cities.

Adiga carefully drove his readers round the bureaucracies and effects of misgovernance. Adiga’s White Tiger which I read some years back also treated issues around corruption from the top and how the poor and middle class suffer it all.
