Mindy sat musing in bed next to Cyrus; he slept soundly while she twirled her fingers through his hair. Men in this age had hair that was much longer, especially the men of power, if they weren’t bald. Moustaches and beards adorned their faces. She had watched the soldiers cutting hair one day while they were camped, that is bivouacked around her property. They used a hunting knife and heated it in the fire every so often. They took a handful and just burned right through it. A haircut was fast, smelled badly, and as for styling, there wasn’t much of that. Many of the men had hair long enough for a short ponytail. When she saw one of them with a ponytail receive a haircut, it only took one swipe with the knife and they were happy with it.

While they were here, Louise was married to General Phineas Scott and the dancing and feasting lasted days. In between the dances and the feasting, ever the general, Mindy and anyone else with any information was subject to interviews usually lasting a couple of hours. The questions were tiring. It was difficult to explain everything, like radiation. When satisfied, Scott moved his command over to Louise’s house and on the way he found several pieces of whole ammunition and two rockets or bombs. So Mindy had heard.

Mindy told him not to take them but General Scott had them loaded into a wagon packed in wooden crates. The wagon travelled far behind the main group and cavalry soldiers rode in a semicircle a couple of hundred yards away from the wagon. He took everything he could find and in some ways Mindy was glad because who knew when the ammunition or a missile might explode.

Their life was back to solitude and ranching. She welcomed the excitement but was glad to be alone with Cyrus once more. Eon was still asleep when Cyrus woke just before dawn and Mindy talked him into a lovemaking session.

“I took such a chance when you said you loved me.” Mindy said near breathless as Cyrus rolled off of her.

“Are you happy with your choice, my love?” Cyrus said while still breathing heavily.

“I couldn’t be happier and never expected to be this happy.” Mindy whispered into Cyrus’s left ear. “I never knew there was this much happiness in the world. Eon came awake. “It is time to get up and fix some breakfast for both my men.” She rolled out of bed and began to dress herself.

“One nice thing about all the folks that showed up here was that many a chore was done by many a hand. We can never pay them all back for how much was accomplished on our ranch in between dances and feasts. It only cost us six steers.”

“I have been so busy, between cooking and cleaning up after cooking for everyone, I haven’t had a chance to see everything you are talking about.”

Cyrus crawled out of bed and said, “I’ll take you around after we eat and show you. You will be very surprised dear.”

“It is a date!” Mindy said as she heard Cyrus dress himself. “I am off to light the candles.”

“I am off to do the morning’s chores until breakfast is ready.” Cyrus followed Mindy out of the bedroom, stopped to don his pistol, hat, and coat. Then he left to open the front door and Myra stood there, ready to knock, “Good morning Myra, Come on in.” Cyrus released the door so she could walk through with a gallant wave of his hand, and then he stepped outside after she entered. He left the door open. Myra closed it as Mindy lit the candles in the first sconce. And for awhile everyone was off at their chores.

After breakfast, Cyrus took Mindy and Myra on a tour while Mindy carried Eon. One of the first things he showed Mindy was the new gate the cavalry built so they could more easily go in and out of the outside fence.

“That really is something and very sturdy.” Mindy said as Cyrus opened the gate. “What’s that?” Mindy asked as she saw a rock with a piece of paper underneath it.

“I’ll get it for you,” Myra said because she was closest. She took a step and picked up the rock and paper and tried to hand it to Mindy who held Eon so very close to where he once escaped,

“Let’s close the gate and move back while we read the note, just hand it to Cyrus, Myra.” Mindy said as she moved back. Myra handed the note to Cyrus after he closed the gate.

Cyrus read the note,”Mindy, it’s from Rephael.”

“Let’s go inside and you can read it to me,” Mindy said and turned toward the house.

Cyrus and Myra followed not far behind, “Myra this is something Mindy and I must discuss in private if you do not mind waiting outside.”

“No that’s fine, I could just go back to the house until I am needed,” Myra offered.

“Yes, when Mindy needs you she will come and get you and if you see Holt, tell him I will find him later.” Cyrus said and Myra nodded in response and walked toward her house.

Mindy walked into her house and sat in the overstuffed chair while holding Eon. Cyrus closed the door and sat at the table but turned the chair toward Mindy and Eon. Cyrus read the letter out loud,

“Dear Mom and Dad …”

When Cyrus finished the letter Mindy said, “I am an American but are we going to do what he wants?” In response, Cyrus sat staring at his wife and son deep in thought.
