New Chemical Element Found in 21th Century
Four new chemical elements now have their official names and symbols, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) announced this week.
After five months of review, the IUPAC chemist finally approved four names for the 110, 115, 117 and 118 superheric elements proposed by the inventors of those elements. The heavy elements (with the number of ataom 104-120) do not form naturally in nature, so they must be created in the laboratory.
Following tradition, the proposed names must pay homage to the place, geographical region or scientist, and end with a specific protocol concerning the placement of each element in the periodic table of elements.
Here are the new names in the periodic table of elements:
Element 113: nihonium (Nh)
Element 115: moscovium (Mc)
Element 117: tennessine (Ts)
Element 118: oganesson (Og)
Last January, IUPAC has announced that these four elements will occupy the periodic table, even though these elements have not been named. Then, last June, IUPAC announced new names, but not final.
