Why people like to read mysteries?

Mysteries and thrillers make up the second most popular genre of books after romance. Why are we so drawn to these stories? I LOVE solving problems and bringing closure to situations, and maybe that is the reason I really enjoy shows such as Forensic Files, CSI, Law and Order, Unsolved Mysteries and so on. And how about you guys. Do you enjoy some mystery and wine at night?

I think one reason people love mysteries is because they are a safe thrill, kind of like roller coasters when you’re a kid. They’re a safe adventure, as well. Just as in any other type of book or documental series, we get to visit exotic or interesting places. You can see the dark side of people, but you know that justice will prevail. Good will overcome evil.

We live in a world beset by wars, violence, and myriad disasters. But murder mysteries may give us hope by telling us stories that begin with evil events, but call forth the efforts of people who can rise to heroic heights and reassure us that, with great effort, evil can be overcome. We love murder mysteries because they are redemptive, they give us hope, and help us move from fear to reassurance.
