I would say that scrap of knowledge is more than most people have. I talk to people all the time who don't know that we are off the gold standard. It's only been 45 years
Unfortunately it is much worse now than in 2008. More debt, more asset bubbles, more fragility in the financial system. There are ways to hedge and protect yourself financially but few people bother to do then. I often ask people when percentage chance do they feel there could be any kind of financial crisis in the foreseeable future and no one has ever said "0 % chance", yet I would say less that 1 % of people have done anything to protect themselves against this scenario....

It's really frightening. The housing crisis of 2008 taught me just how fragile the economy is. So many middle class people lost everything.
