[The Landlady] - The most disturbing short story I have ever read. What's yours?

in #story7 years ago (edited)

For a guy who wrote "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and many other books for children and teens, “The Landlady” creeped me the hell out. I literally wet my pants.

Like, seriously, the genius Roald Dahl? You’re a children’s author! Not that I knew it was a horror story but wasn't expecting this and he kinda of took me by surprise.

Here's how the theme of the story goes, buckle up :0

A man, Billy Weaver, sees a sign board for a "Bed and Breakfast" place. He is inexplicably drawn to the place, so he goes inside to inquire.

Billy is welcomed by a very cordial and very talkative landlady, who offers him a cup of tea. Billy feels that the tea tastes like bitter almonds which also happens to be what the poison, cyanide, tastes like. Perhaps the landlady snuck some in, or the tea is just bad tea. The writer doesn't really does into detail.

The landlady keeps on conversing with Billy, specifying two men who went by her Bed and Breakfast put, Gregory Temple and Christopher Mulholland. Billy supposes they sound well-known and recollect that they were in the daily papers. He remembers that Mulholland was accounted for to have vanished.

The landlady waves this off and says that both Temple and Mulholland are still with her, together "upstairs", in spite of the fact that their entrances in her visitor log were recorded two years back. She likewise informs Billy regarding her enthusiasm for stuffing her pets when they've died. She has a dead puppy named Basil, and demonstrates a stuffed, dead Basil to a bewildered Billy. Billy discovers that, beside Temple and Mulholland, the landlady has had no guests to her hotel beside himself. This implies it has been a long time since the landlord has had visitors.

Weaver proceeds to confirm his deduction by asking the landlady whether or not she’s had guests after Temple and Mulholland. And then Dahl writes the kicker ending;

“No, my dear.” The landlady smiles at him. “Only you.”

THE END

I should probably change my diaper now lolxx.

The story "Landlady" is basically implying that she stuffed Temple and Mulholland and keeps them upstairs, and that she will do the same to Billy Weaver so she can 'play' with them. Now that's what I call disgusting..
