Magic Cards

Isabella sat by the window with tears in her eyes.
Pedro, who had sworn his undying love to her just yesterday, had left today, saying as he went:
“We need to take a break from each other.”
Isabella responded with proud silence and only began to cry once Pedro was out of sight.
She didn’t remember how long she had sat by the window.
It seemed like an eternity to her.
Suddenly, her solitude was broken by a soft, feminine voice:
“Don’t be sad, dear, he’s not worth it!”
Isabella raised her tear-stained eyes and saw a young gypsy woman holding a deck of cards.
Her first impulse was to chase the gypsy away.
But something elusively mystical in the gypsy’s eyes stopped her.
She wiped her eyes and looked intently into the eyes of the uninvited guest.
“How do you know why I’m crying?” she asked.
“The cards tell me everything,” replied the gypsy woman, “sometimes even more than I ask for.”
Isabella narrowed her eyes slyly and asked:
“Maybe the cards will tell you who I was crying over?”
“Of course, that’s the easiest part.”
With an imperceptible movement, the gypsy flipped the deck over and, without looking, pulled the Jack of Clubs from the middle. She placed the card in front of Isabella and said:
“Today I’ll call him Pedro. But tomorrow he might become Ricardo, Miguel, or someone else.”
Stunned, Isabella looked at the card, and the Jack of Clubs strangely reminded her of Pedro.
“How did you…” whispered Isabella, then fell silent.
“You’re lucky today, Isabella,” said the gypsy woman, “but if you let con artists like Pedro into your life, your life will turn into a nightmare. Be careful when choosing your future.”
Isabella stared at the gypsy woman, spellbound, took out her wallet, and handed her a few coins.
The gypsy shook her head and said:
“If I wanted to make money off you, I would have promised you great happiness with a treacherous fiancé. But today I warned you for free. So never turn away people who want to help you. Even if it’s just a simple gypsy with magic cards.”
