That is just the way that it happens a lot of times, people tend to push away those that they love and care about the most when they are dying. I guess it is instinct, a subconscious desire to shun those that you love believing that you are protecting them from the grief. Actually you just drag out the grief and rob you both of the last bit of time that you can spend together. The end comes as a shock instead of something that you have shared.
