Making Red Roses the Audiobook 08

So finally sat down to work on Red Roses again. Because of my notes from the last blog I can remember where I left off and where I need to start up.

So, I’m going to start with listening for pops and clicks on Chapter 01.

One thing to remember as we continue this project. I’m only removing obvious clicks and pops. Used to do it for the podcast Get Behind Me, Now Stay There. Since this project stems from that project the workflow process will remain the same.

Will even use the same laptop, an aging dinosaur. It’s final project? It might even add clicks and pops, LOL. My own digital high fidelity if you please. Keep in mind this project might get submitted to the Grammys. (We met a lot of artists on the podcast.)

Got a million things going on, people calling, people visiting, Steemit post replies, discord channel, even a spot on #poetryunited’s DLive show. Not to mention getting things done around the house. Like pulling weeds, digging out the roses’ garden bed, and then giving them a nice soaking of water.

So finally back to clicks and pops on Chapter 01.

So now with notes for each file:

Got a music cut from Rike Luxx’s Last King. The beat builds in six sections. I’m using the first five. So this music file begins the sequence.

The scene takes place during a carriage ride that started in 02-RedRoses-CyrusEmerson-Prologue. So using the same part of the carriage ride noise from the previous file to begin 03-RedRoses-CyrusEmerson-Ch.01. Also, there’s the establishment of the carriage ride taking place with the sound of the carriage provided by Pond5. Going to have the noise run through the entire chapter.

And done. Music intro with chapter heading that fades to carriage noise for the entire carriage ride scene in this chapter. Fade to louder carriage noise for chapter outro.

Repeat the steps for this file, only with the second progression of suspenseful music on the chapter heading. Same carriage noise as the ride continues for the second day of a long journey. Only the noise fades out during an important moment in the plot development. We learn what troubles the Lady of Berwickshire.

And done. Decided to add some music as well with emphasis on the dramatic, as if a blockbuster movie soundtrack. Carriage noise on the outro to tie the track together.

Each chapter stands on its own. Yet they also help to develop the other chapters. For example in Chapter 01 the carriage ride noise remains throughout the chapter to establish that they are indeed traveling in a horse drawn carriage. While in Chapter 02 this sound allowed to drop out with an important plot development. And of course, the progression of the music on the chapter headings.

Only 20 or so files to go. LOL. Doing one file at a time. Although for the most part the music and sound has already been planned out, once I delve into the audio there are little things I notice. These cues, so to speak, add depth to the way the music and sound are used.

Not only do I want the experience of mixing in music and sound on an audiobook, as an Audio Engineer. I really want the music and sound to enhance the story, and to improve the experience for the listener.

Some critics say that music and sound detracts from the story. Yet it really depends on the trend of that year’s audiobooks that are submitted for Audie and Grammy awards. If there are a lot of full cast with sound audiobooks then it’s a good thing. If the leading books for the year are celebrity’s reading their own book then it’s a bad thing. Kind of like Bitcoin. When it’s up its gold. When Bitcoin’s down; it’s the end of cryptocurrency.

I can almost guarantee that my audiobook Red Roses will not sell if it’s single narration, or if it’s got music and sound. So might as well have fun with it. And for the few people that purchase this title hope they feel like they got a present on Christmas morning. Their very own audiobook made special for them. A heartwarming surprise, like a bouquet of Red Roses for Valentines!
