The audience.

A young boy was sitting on the stairs in front of the door to the house that he lived in. The sun shone on his dark blond hair, cut in a bowl shape. The look on his face was concentrated, he was flicking his yoyo away, towards the street, where at this moment none of his friends were to be seen, and back to himself.
He knew different ways to do it, and was practicing to learn a few more that he had seen others do and even one way that he had come up with by himself, to impress his friends. He was glad no one was watching him right then, 'cause he made quite a few blunders, his mother who was looking at him from the kitchen window, while doing the dishes, didn't count, of course.
Shoot! Well that was definitely a big fat blunder! And now he couldn't bring the yoyo back up again, now he'd have to wind it all back around by hand, that was humiliating! He hoped that wouldn't happen when his friends were there. He regretted not knowing that trick where, even if you failed and your yoyo was embarrassingly dangling at the end of your line, you could still look cool by stepping on it with your toes and making it roll all the way back up. That would be sooo cool if he knew how to do that trick, man....
His mother grinned when she saw the way the tip of his tongue peeped out of his mouth from exertion. He was getting up now, trying the trick with his toes, giving the yoyo a swing to come back up. A few grown up curses came from that small mouth, his mother pretended not to hear them through the open kitchen window, respecting the way men at work deal with their disappointments. 'All part of it.' She said to herself. And when he finally managed to roll the yoyo back up, merely setting it off with his toes, she dropped the sponge in the water and clapped her soapy hands, letting out a load cheer. 'Huraaaah, you did it!'
All of a sudden his mother did seem like a worthy audience and he gave her a big ear to ear grin filled with pride, only to turn towards the street right after, because his friends had come out, finally finished with their lunch.
