Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh

The city of Chapaevsk, Samara region. One of the main attractions of this small city is the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh. This architectural monument in this year marks 100 years from the date of construction. It has withstood many adversities, but it remained almost intact.

The building of the temple was built according to the project of the architect Dmitry Alexandrovich Werner in 1918. The building is a kind of architectural and composition form and remarkable decorative and plastic processing of facades with the use of a large number of facing material, natural stone and colored glazed tiles. The church is five-domed with a central light drum. Construction was carried out at the expense of the military department under the guidance of the author of the project. Still unfinished, she had already begun to act. Services in the church went until 1926, when the temple was closed.

Soon the process of destruction began. A few years later, the bell tower was destroyed, and the building was occupied by the House of Defense. Inside the church a shooting gallery was organized. In the 1930s and 1940s, the faces of the saints were cemented with cement on the facade of the temple, tiled ornaments in niches along the entire perimeter of the building were knocked down. During the Great Patriotic War, anti-aircraft guns were installed on the site of the bell tower, and the building of the temple served as a storage for shells for cannons and a vegetable storehouse.

In 1952, the building was transferred to the City House of Pioneers. Inside the building, a significant restructuring was carried out, the upper tiers of the bell tower were dismantled. In 1990, by decision of the Executive Committee of the Chapaev City Council of Deputies, the building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Since that time, the church services have been resumed. In 1995, the temple of Sergius of Radonezh was included in the list of monuments of federal significance.
