Have you ever seen whiter sand or water so crystal-clear?

in #story8 years ago

The most amazing part is that this isn't even the ocean! The crystal-clear water is not saltwater but is pure, freshwater. Welcome to Lake Mackenzie, Fraser Island.

Lake Mackenzie

Isn't it stunning?

What you are looking at here is Lake Mackenzie, which is a massive perched lake on Fraser Island in Australia. It is approximately 1.2 kilometres long and almost 1 kilometre wide. The lake covers an area equal to 150 hectares. The sand here is pure, white silica and is not only beautiful to look at but feels incredibly soft between your toes. The silky sand acts as one big filter, which in turn gives the water its crystal-clear qualities. Actually the water is so pure that it can support very little life. I am yet to see a living creature in the lake.

Here you can see me standing in water up to my knees, yet it is completely transparent.

What is a "Perched Lake"?

A perched lake contains only rainwater, no groundwater, and is not fed by any streams and does not flow to the ocean. To tick all of these boxes is actually quite difficult to do, and add this to the fact that this perched lake is on a sand island, and you get all the unique elements to create this truly remarkable lake. It's one in a million, and I haven't seen anything else like it in the world.

People travel from all over the world to swim and sunbake here

If you are used to freshwater lakes being dark and dirty then this one is like no other. The water changes from clear through to at least a dozen different shades of blue as the depth changes. Even on the hottest day the water is cool, and fresh, and leaves you with a different feeling than getting out of the saltwater ocean. It's like nature's own lagoon swimming pool that you would find in the ultimate resort..

Me enjoying a refreshing swim

View from the Air

This is the only picture that I did not take, but I will be purchasing a drone before my next trip so that I can hopefully catch the beauty from the air.

That is so amazing! The fact that there is no in flowing and out flowing streams confuses me. Lake Tahoe in California is super clear but has a lot of inflow and outflow and is at high elevation. Check out my most recent post about Havasu Falls to see more blue water here in the United States!

Yeah, I think that is one of the things that makes this lake so unique and the fact that the entire island is sand on a volcanic bed, there is no dirt anywhere. I'm going to check out your pics now. Cheers

That last photo of the guy in the water is the best! He's a super model! :)

joining now, thanks

Impressive! Thanks for sharing!!!
