XVII-XVIII centuries pirates - one of the most colorful cultural archetypes, about which many myths that do not meet reality are built up.

  1. Earrings

It would be strange, but there was a certain belief among the pirates that the earrings could save the hearing - which, in fact, was a big problem in this "profession", since in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, they inevitably had to "work" next to the thundering cannons - which were usually located in small rooms. The waxen ear plugs that were used during the battles were even attached to the earrings.
In addition, the pirate's earring was this more than just an ornament - it was also savings on funeral, it was considered that this is the pay for body burying the body. And some pirates even engraved the name of their home port on the earrings - hoping that the body will be returned there.
Of course, there was no shortage of superstitions. It was believed that piercing not only protects against seasickness but also improves vision or even helps in the case if they will begin to drown.
