How to Get Through the Norwegian Winter | Adventure Every Day Episode 6

in #story8 years ago

Norway winter.jpg

Winter in Norway is tough. The piercing cold, the 5-hour days with 3pm sunsets (much less if you live in the North), the seemingly endless wait for spring - it can absolutely be a real challenge to get through.

But there are ways, and those who live in Norway know them well. In fact, if you ask a Norwegian for their thoughts on the upcoming winter, you might just get a response of Jeg gleder meg til det, meaning I'm looking forward to it.

Looking forward to it? Seriously? That's right, when you live here long enough, you realize that you have only two choices. Either embrace it, find what it has to offer, and make the most of it, or be miserable for several months. But once you open your eyes to the possibilities, you find that there really is a lot to offer - skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country, ice skating, and the Northern Lights, just to name a few. And then there's one of our favorites - cozy cabins.

Norwegians love their cabins. Almost every family owns one, and they are most often not exactly located in "convenient" places. A 10 km ski trip in the dark to a wooded cabin with no running water? Helt vanlig - totally ordinary.

On our most recent cabin adventure, it didn't require going to that kind of extreme (although I would gladly sign up for that any time!). Just a windy, snow-covered road followed by a short trek through knee deep snow and we had made it into the winter wonderland.

This is what Episode 6 of our Adventure Every Day web series is all about - the beauty of the simple things in the cold, quiet winter. Hope you enjoy!

That looks like a very nice and peaceful place to visit.

That it is! One amongst many in Norway. Come experience it for yourself sometime :)

My wife and I hope to some day.

Norway looks like such a beautiful country!

Thanks @alcibiades! It is indeed beautiful here. I'll have a lot more cool places to show if you follow along :)

Once spend some time in Norway near Tromso, really beautiful in wintertime.

That's awesome! I want to go back up North soon. Did you get to see the Northern Lights? Last time I was up there, I got to see a pretty good show, now I want to go back! Here's the video I captured:

Let me know if your adventures bring you back to Norway any time!

Great video and i was lucky enough to get to see the Northern lights. Truly amazing! Stayed there for 3 weeks on a COLD weather exercise while being in the army.
