Ruth took a step back like someone had just slapped her.
And before she could say a word…
A warm rush of liquid ran down her thighs.

Her water had just broken.
She held her belly, breathing heavily.
Jude turned around quickly.
“Wait… what’s that?” he asked.

Ruth didn’t reply because pain had already taken over her body.

“Oh my God! Not now that I’m about to travel next week!” Jude grumbled, already irritated.
Instead of helping, he dragged her roughly by the arm and shouted,
“This is not your first labour, woman, so stop acting like this! Get yourself together and meet me in the car!”

“Wait, what about the kids? Please call them from their room so we can all leave together,” Ruth managed to say through the pain.
Jude didn’t respond.
He hissed, stormed out of the house, and went to start the car.

Ruth slowly made her way to the children’s room to get them ready.
“Mummy, are you okay?” Tiara, her first daughter, asked, running toward her.
“Run to my room. There’s a big black bag bring it to me,” she said with a faint voice.
The smart 8-year-old ran quickly and brought the bag.

Ruth watched the children walk outside while she locked the door, groaning from the pain.
Jude kept honking loudly and impatiently.
“Be fast! You’re wasting my fuel!” he shouted, his head sticking out of the car window.

Ruth tried to steady herself, but the pain was intense.
That was when Chinaza, their neighbour, rushed over, dropping a bucket of water she was carrying.
“Mummy Tiara! My goodness, wait let me help you to the car.”

With Chinaza’s help, Ruth was finally able to get into the backseat.
The kids squeezed in beside her.
Jude didn’t say a word.
Not even a thank you to Chinaza.
He drove off angrily, speeding toward the hospital.

On the way, Ruth turned weakly toward Chinaza.
“Please, help me call my mother and my elder sister. Ask them to meet us at the hospital.”

“I will,” Chinaza replied, dialing immediately.
She couldn’t help but notice Jude’s cold and irritable demeanor, but chose to remain silent.

At the hospital, the nurses were surprised to see Ruth again , she had just been in for a final scan a few hours earlier.
None of them had expected her labour to start so soon.

As Ruth was wheeled into the labour ward, the midwife pulled Jude aside.

“Mr. Jude, please remember your wife can’t give birth normally. She must have a Caesarean section, just like her previous deliveries.”

Jude hissed quietly.
This is the exact thing I was trying to avoid. Another ₦250,000 for a baby girl?
He mumbled under his breath, already calculating escape routes in his mind.

“Sir?” The midwife tapped his shoulder.
“Ah yes, nurse,” he smiled faintly. “Actually, I need to rush home to get her hospital bag. I’ll be back in thirty minutes,” Jude said, pretending to be concerned.

But Chinaza interrupted.
“The hospital bag is right here with me,” she said, pointing to the bag beside her.
Jude realized his plan had failed.

No more excuses.
Frustrated, he began insisting Ruth must deliver naturally.
“She should give birth via VD (vag**nal delivery). That’s how women did it in the olden days,” he argued.

“But her last attempt almost cost her life,” the midwife said firmly. “Please proceed to the cashier to make payment. Your wife’s life is at stake.”

“Well, I’m not paying a dime!” Jude shouted, and stormed out of the hospital angrily.

Seeing all that just played out, Chinaza stared in disbelief.
“I need to call her mother,” she said, already dialing.

“Hello, ma. Please, where are you? You need to start coming.”
“I’m already on my way. Where’s her husband?” Ruth’s mother asked.

“Hmm… Just come, Ma,” Chinaza responded, trying not to cause more panic.

Minutes later, the matron came in, visibly upset.
“If payment won’t be made for the woman in Private Ward 15, move her to another hospital. We need space!”

Chinaza heard it and rushed to the matron, pleading with her to allow Ruth stay a bit longer.
After some back and forth, she was granted permission to stay, and Chinaza was also allowed to see Ruth in the ward.

Inside the private ward…
Chinaza sat beside Ruth’s hospital bed.
She looked up at Chinaza faintly.
“Where’s my husband?” Ruth asked weakly, placing her hand on Chinaza’s lap.

“Hmmm... he went to…” Chinaza scratched her head, struggling for words.
But the nurse taking Ruth’s vitals interrupted.
“Madam Ruth, your husband stormed out of the hospital. He said he won’t pay a dime for another CS.”
Ruth closed her eyes, sighed deeply, and whispered,
“No problem. I know what to do.”
“That was unprofessional,” Chinaza snapped at the nurse.
“Well, someone had to say it,” the nurse replied rudely.
“Please just do your job,” Chinaza muttered, brushing her off.

“Chinaza... my PIN is 5633,” Ruth said, breathing heavily.
“Transfer the money for the operation. I can’t bear this pain anymore.” Ruth pleaded.

Without delay, Chinaza rushed downstairs and made the full payment for the surgery.
Returning, she approached the matron.
“Payment has been made. Can the operation begin now?”

“Well… we still need her husband’s signature on the consent form before we proceed,” the matron said bluntly.

At that moment, Chinaza exploded.
“Says WHO?! Which law says a man must sign before a woman can be saved?”
