Sky shares fly high
Shares in Sky plc are the best performing on the FTSE100 today after U.S. cable company Comcast launched a takeover offer for the satellite broadcasting firm. The stock rose 20 per cent higher in mid-morning trade after the surprise bid, which saw Comcast offering to pay £12.50 a share for Sky, valuing it at £22.1 billion - outdoing a bid from Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox, which bid £18.5 billion to buy the 61% of Sky it doesn't already own. The Fox bid was rejected by the UK's competition authority in January after it came to the decision allowing a takeover to take place would give the Murdoch Family too much influence over the political agenda. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said: "We think that Sky would be very valuable to us as we look to expand our presence internationally."
