We also got one for imsteinsbrother for Christmas. It was the reccomended Wacom. More expensive than you mentioned...by triple. But supposed to be solid and long lasting. So far it started out with a registration glitch. Not sure if they worked it out. I think it's an excellent skill for a digital arts hobby or career. Lets see how it goes!!
Great stuff. My older son doesn't use the pad only my younger son. My older son only likes minecraft, sleep and basketball.
The art program krita has a lot of features that will take time to learn. A lot of people use adobe photoshop but that looks even more complicated. I will work at it little by little.
His came with two software suites. Corel and photoshop... Decent ones. But not sure how well they mesh with the pad. Imsteins wants to do animation. Let me know how that Krita goes....maybe we will get it.

I haven't done animation on Krita. I think over time it will be second nature. A simple way to animate is paste the picture on ppt and then save as a video file.
