in #stemng6 years ago

Welcome to the 22nd episode of the stemng digest series where we bring to you some of the best posts under the #stemng tag in the past week.

For those that do not know yet, stemng is a sub-community of steemSTEM, a community-driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts by Nigerians on Steemit. The project involves submitting quality STEM-related posts to the steemSTEM management for upvoting and resteeming where applicable.

More information about stemng activities are found here, while details of what it means to be part of steemSTEM can be found here, as well.

As we usually do, we have sifted through the stemng tag and even though there were several good posts to choose from, below are the posts that stood out for week #14.

Saturday: The Bad vs The Good: THE COMPUTER VIRUS AND THE ANTIVIRUS

The virus is something that no one wants near them either as a disease or in the form of a malicious program designed to wreck a PC. The blog by @michaelwrites sheds light on what a computer virus is, how it works, and how to detect and prevent the spread of it.

Wednesday: Let's talk about how bigger brains come at a cost

The human being is on top of the food chain; that position did not come free. @starrichie's article describes some of the cost of having a larger brain compared to our smaller brain species that inhabit our solar system. An interesting read which we think you should read and not just take our words for it.

Thursday : Who Says You Cannot Make your Own Airplane? Series #1: Understanding The Mechanism Behind Airplanes And The Misconceptions

The cost of an aeroplane may a little on the high side, but not to worry @teekingtv may be the one who may finally show you the way to getting one by building it. But first you will have to read about how the aeroplane works before making one: that is fair enough.

Friday: ALBEDO: An explanation of surface reflectivity and why I don’t really like the sun

The last post of the week is from @writeit, and it was a sunny one. The Albedo phenomenon describes the way the sun reflects off a surface. It delves further to show the relationship between the surface reflection to a performance of solar panels and global warming.

You are welcome.

@writeit, you should love the Sun oo lol... Good work, you guys rock!

Some of you should consider teaching even if it is as a volunteer or part time job. It might be a good way to help our education sector. Many teachers teaching STEM have either confined themselves to what is available many years ago or simply lack the knowledge of subject matter. We need to revive STEM. Many STEM teachers don't even know what has changed in the last one decade. I am just imagining a pool of young vibrant and knowledgeable individuals going into the classroom to teach science. The outcome will be explosive.

Thank you @gentleshaid and @greenrun for bringing this together. Good job @stemng

Teaching is an amazing career which surprisingly is not as financially rewarding as other jobs on the same level. I wish it should be to motivate many to join the profession. Amazing teachers makes the hardest subject easy to understand. Thank you.

I won't advice anyone to go into teaching for financial gains, because it might be disappointing. However, passion and willingness to give back should be the drive. I tell you we are lacking passionate teachers in the public education sector. We tend to believe teaching is for the low achievers in the society. Which painfully should not be.

Effective teachers are true leaders

Haha @obamike, i guess u have no choice but to do so. Thanks man.

And yes, I taught thermodynamics and basic calculus during my university days.

Teaching is a really wonderful thing that is sadly just undervalued in many parts of the world.

Cool! If you have spare time you can still teach in your community as a way of giving back. The glory days of teaching are coming...though I won't advice anyone to go into it for the money, cos you will be frustrated. Passion will lead you

Very true man. Especially in our part of the world.

I’m honored to be featured on digest 😃
