stemng digest: week #17

in #stemng6 years ago

Welcome to the 17th episode of the stemng digest series where we bring to you some of the best posts under the #stemng tag in the past week.

For those that could be reading us for the first time, stemng is a sub-community of steemSTEM, a community-driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts by Nigerians on Steemit. The project involves submitting quality STEM-related posts to the steemSTEM management for upvoting and resteeming where applicable.

More information about stemng activities can be found here, while details of what it means to be part of steemSTEM can be found here, as well.

As we usually do, we have sifted through the stemng tag and even though there were several good posts to choose from, below are the posts that stood out for week #14.

Saturday: Heat Exchangers - The "Temperature Manager" of Our Machines

Opening this week's selection is this well crafted article by @mrbreeziewrites. He delved into technical aspects of heat exchanger, the varieties that exist and their applications in various day to day and industrail processes. Quite simplified and enjoyable to read. I will recommend this to anyone.

Sunday: The Earth is NOT Flat!

In all honesty, I really did not know that there are folks that believe that the earth is flat :) until I started blogging here on steemit. To each man to its belief, that's what they say. But that popular saying does not apply in science where conclusions are made based on evidences. This beautiful article from @bitfairy is a reminder to the conspiracy theorists that believe the earth is flat. Have a good read.

Monday: Electricity and the human system --- Impulses, shocks, zaps and what-nots

Featuring third on this week's digest is @pangoli. He took us into the world of electricity and how the human body can be considered as an electrical system through the works of neurones, dendrites and gates. If you have never really thought about why the human body is liable to electric shocks, then I will recommend you read this post.

Tuesday: What I learnt For The Week 16: Wearable Electric Skateboard, Plastic-Eating Wax Worm, Philophobia, Green-Blooded Skink, Sleeping-Beauty Syndrome

It was started by @mobbs, but the series of 'what I learnt for the week' seems to be gaining ground within the STEM community on steemit. This article by the robot himself @samminator delves through several interesting scientific discoveries. It's always an interesting stuff from the author. A good read for any science lover.

Wednesday: How To Stay Green: Vegetable Production

This post would definitely interest vegans :). How to stay green by @humbledeen is an article about vegetable production, especially for the Nigerian folks. It explains in details how to carryout vegetable farming, especially vegetables such as Celosia, Amaranthus and Corchorus. I am sure everyone can learn a few thing from the post.

Thursday : Venomous Creatures #2: King Cobra

Featuringon thursday this week's thursday is this post by @menoski. Venomous creature is about the life and lifestyle of the king cobra. I learnt a lot that I didnt know about this snake in this post and I think I now understand why it is feared so much. I mean, who would not fear a snake that feeds on its fellow snakes? A great article by menoski. Enjoyable read.

Friday: Measuring the Speed of Light

Rounding off the selection for this week is this post by @bitfairy on measuring the speed of light. We all know (perhaps not all of us) that the speed of light is approximately 3 x 108 m/s but how many of us has ever asked how this figure was arrived at? Well, thanks to this author, it is time to have an idea.

About the selection process

The post for each day was selected based on consensus between the stemng management, in persons of @greenrun and @gentleshaid. This week's selections was made by @greenrun and presented by @gentleshaid.
