Today, I would like to share with you something that has been driving me nuts for some couple of months now, something that is almost making me go GAGA which is houseflies! Yes! you read right, it is house fly- that tiny little thing can be very annoying sometimes.
Well I used to think it was only me until i shared around some colleagues of mine but I just dont get why would I plan to look absolutely great and astonishing for the day and as soon as I stepped out of the main gate of my hostel I start having a second thought about my dress or why would I chose to have a nice time with my girl like a picnic outside the compound and to enjoy the conducive weather and as soon as I opened the thermocool flask to have a taste of the meal she brought for us, its the annoying boozing sound of houseflies that reminds of we are not in my room and will just spoil the mood, had to just let it go but sometimes I have to just go back inside before I will spend the rest of the evening swatting and screaming to KEEP OFF!!

With different episodes of annoyance and harassment by houseflies this is what made me to devote some times and research the reason why these tiny insects would disturb me or what would they possibly want from me and I have gotten some tips and all you need to know about HOUSFLIES.

ABOUT HOUSEFLIES

Physical Appearance

Well houseflies are insects that belong to the suborder cyclorrhapha and they are known scientifically to as Musca domestica.
Houseflies has compound eyes which serves as a very important tools for them and in adaptation. They are 4mm long and are usually grey in color and there are four band stripes that runs longitudinally along their abdomen which is covered with short hairs along with the thorax and the appendages except for the head.**

Habitat

Houseflies are synathropic animals i.e. they benefit from humans and animals therefore they are rarely found in the desert rather in the midst of humans and animals. When houseflies are indoor, they prefer to stay in the corners and crevices of the house where they wont be easily noticed. While outdoors they lie around the bush, in the corners of your fences.

Feeding

Like I stated earlier they benefits from humans and animals ecologically, therefore they eat humans food animals foods, carcasses and garbage. And thats the reason why you will see houseflies roaming round your waste bin and dump sites, its nothing personal at all they are only looking for what to eat.

Reproduction and lifespan

Housefly lays about 75-100 eggs in a batch and they lay it in a warm, moist and secluded object which is capable of producing nutrient for the larvae till it gets energy to source for its own feed.
An average housefly spends about 3-8 weeks but average of 4 weeks.

So why Do They Follow Me

Well, that been said back to the reason why housefly follow humans when its not that the one's whole body is covered with shit or feces. Based on my research the main and only reason as to why houseflies follow humans is because; houseflies are basically scavengers and all they spend their time looking for is a suitable solid environment that will provide them with warmth, moist and at the same time nourishment-food which the human body is definitely the only suitable habitat with all the aforementioned characteristics.

Therefore, thats the reason that when houseflys flocks around you and no matter how many times you scream, swat and shoo they just wont go away its because you are good source of livelihood to them and all they want is to live to. Houseflies are extremely interested in your sweat, the salt, oil and dead cells on your skin which are good source of nutrient to them just like feces and rotting flesh.

So think about it for some moments, although its nuisance to us and flies around you can be so irritating and frustrating but if it were you, that you saw an environment that offers you food and shelter and everything is just perfect even though they dont want you there, wont you try to convince them to let you stay. Yea, thats just the way houseflies feel too, though they are not trying to convince you, they just want to take it by force.

Now the following steps are to be taken if you want to avoid being embarrassed by houseflies:

Avoid their habitat: the best way to stay away from hose flies is stay away from them which can be done either by moving away from them or sending them away from you. Natural habitats of houseflies are dirty environment, gutters, garbage, waste bins and bushes. Try as much as possible to get those away from you and houseflies are a step away from you.

Keep away things that can attract them: Different flies are attracted to different things; house flies are attracted to smelly things like dead things, feces, garbage, trash cans while fruits fly are attracted to fruit fragrance, so if you cream or perfume smells like fruit, you might get yourself being molested by fruit flies and also black flies are attracted to co2 we breathe out.

Wash yourself often: Yes! I meant it. Take your bathe well, wash every part judiciously make sure the dead cells are off because thats what keep the houseflies attracted to you and if you dont take time to wash it yourself the houseflies will do the needful.

The use of fly traps: if the flies persist in your neighborhood, there are series of fly traps, just get one and spread it around your environments.

Use of insecticides spray or fly repellent: these are mad of chemicals that are harmful or disastrous to flies and whenever they are used makes the flies uncomfortable and some do kill them, you can sue that if the flies are proving to be stubborn.

Therefore with all said above, If followed judiciously I believe We won't be harrased or followed by flies again...take this from someone that has been there.
