Understanding Wireless Charging Technology , All You need to Know About Its Working Principle_ Facts Over Fiction

Virtually everybody is astonished on hearing wireless charging_ we become curious about its possibility. Interestingly wireless charging principle is not a new thing, it is ancestral to the technology of today. But it came to limelight after featuring in smart phones. In 1960s, wireless energy transfer was adopted in health and medical fields_ref The principle on which wireless charging works was proposed by an English scientist who was a victim of electrocution.
When Oersted announced his discovery of electromagnetism, Faraday who was the son of a poor blacksmith immediately started his own experiments to explore the features of electromagnetism, after a successful experiment, he proposed his principle of electromagnetic induction.

The process of wireless charger is simple with a proper knowledge of induction, the wireless charger base uses a primary induction coil to create an alternating electromagnetic field, the power in this electromagnetic field is induced in the secondary induction coil on the receiver positioned at the back of the phone via electromagnetic induction. Finally, the induced power is converted back to alternating current which is further rectified and filtered to suite the device being charged.

From the fundamentals of electrical engineering, anytime a primary and secondary coil are wounded, a transformer is produced. So, it is electrically right to say that the wireless charger is a transformer.

Merits Of Wireless Charging

Every advancement in technology, comes with its own benefits which make it unique. Corrosion can occur to wires due to presence of oxygen, short circuiting and internal disconnection of the wires is possible. Wireless charging/energy-transfer eliminates the above problems.
Some electronic devices are so sleek and small that attaching a charging port would be burdensome, wireless charging eliminates what would have been a setback.

Demerits Of Wireless Charging

Everything that has advantages also has disadvantages. With wireless charging, high power transmission is impossible. The efficiency of wireless charging is relatively low due to losses in form of radiation. Also, the cost for wireless charging is expensive
Compatibility has been the issue of wireless charging. One wireless charger, might not charge another wireless charging phone. This is a big challenge as a user of wireless charging phone might end up discarding his phone if he eventually does not see a wireless charge compatible with his brand. Though some technology firms have started manufacturing wireless charger with multiple compatibility

Conclusion

The wireless charging or inductive charging technology relies on the principle of electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction. Oersted and Micheal Faraday are the brains behind the principle of wireless charging technology. Recent advancement in technology envisage that in some years to come, all electronics device would be powered wireless. What a solace!!!
