we interact with computers using symbols everyday. Some symbols have really funny history. From watching your smartphone boot to selecting songs in our music players, most of these operations don't contain clear texts. We just can't do without these tiny friends.

Android is Linux based operating system optimized mostly for smartphones, phablets and and tablets. Google was the major supporter of Open Handset Alliance that developed the OS and later purchased it in 2005. The icon which was designed by Irina Blok depicts a simple design yet appear complex and robotic with whole green coloration. The icon signifies a playful logo while the green coloration represents growth prosperity and freshness. There's no other meaning intended for the android icon other than the one stated here.

There was a popular saying the the android logo was stolen from the video game Gauntlet: The Third Encounter. Funny enough the character with a striking resemblance with android logo was called ANDROID!. Some even say it was from the beloved droid from the Star Wars Saga but Blok admitted that many logos that has robotic designs were drafted but the final logo was the one she initially sketched!

The Bluetooth symbol has a very interesting history and it dated back to 10th century! The then Danish king, Harold Blatand had an enthusiasm for blueberries, hence its it a lot and always has a resulting blue stained teeth. He united the whole of Scandinavia, in the same manner Bluetooth for connectivity between disparate devices. The icon was said to be an embodiment of the combination of the initials of Harold Bluetooth (in English) from a very old runes. Hence the icon was coined by placing the rune for "H" the rune for "B".

Anyone that has used the Sony walkman would definitely take the play button serious. No one really knows the history of the play button but Gizmozo has this to say:

The play button was created in the 1960s when audio visual was still reel-to-reel. The triangle actually represents arrow indicating the direction the reel went.

But that was just a mere speculation. The symbol got it's global recognition from global consumer electronics industry. It was globally accepted that the triangle means go.
The Fast-forward icon was a derivative of the play button in the sense that if one triangle means go, then double triangle means go even faster! and the direction indicates the way this "go" was intended.

APPLE LOGO

The apple logo was designed back in 1977 by Rob Janoff. He intended a simple meaning for logo which is the use of computers to obtain knowledge and a source of enlightenment for the human race. The bite off Apple's logo according to Rob was to differentiate apple from cherry but ended up attracting other historians, lol. Some say it has its inspiration from the story of Adam and Eve in the bible and that Eve gave in to temptation by taking off a bite from the apple. Really funny. Some say it was designed to honor Turing who killed himself by biting off an apple he laced with cyanide. He was found dead after taking one bite from the apple. Turing died because of his sexual preference though he saved millions of lives through the invention of the world's first super computer, the Enigma.

Most of us are conversant with this icon, even the uneducated and the old amongst us use this icon on daily bases. Its present almost in many corners of our modern web pages and definitely present in gallary application in our smartphones. The share icon which was developed by Alex King in 2006 and later purchased 1 year later by ShareThis, has a resemblance with tree diagram.
The idea behind the icon is the dissemination of information from a source to at least two different destinations. The share icon does not have one universally accepted symbol because the share iconography world is divided. Hence, different OEMs have different share icons.

Currently, there's no clear winner in the battle of icons among these OEMs. so we just get accustomed to them all!

In the digital world, on is represented with a one(1) while off is represented with a zero(0). Power button usually performs the duty of powering up and powering down a machine. Its history can also be traced to early electrical switches. you can still see such switches in today's stabilizers. The On side has 1 engraved on it while the Off side has 0 engraved on it. The power button icon is universally accepted and popular.

The usb icon was inspired by the Neptune's Trident Dreizack which symbolizes power. The icon depicts a source being connected to three different destinations signifying universality. The usb icon is abstract and there's no way of knowing what it stands for if you have not come in contact with its purpose before.
