I think charging time is definitely a critical issue. The other is the weight of the batteries, especially in EVs (not so much in other industrial energy-storage applications).
Petrol still can hold far more energy-per-kg than batteries. That will be the next step in bettery technology breakthroughs.
The fossil fuel is still at top of its game. We are all hoping for that alternative that kicks it off the lead. Graphene batteries would definitely be lighter than the conventional ones we use at the moment.
