My Home Town is DOVER, Kent - Home of two very famous landmarks.
Dover Castle and the White Chalk Cliffs.

I have been out this morning taking snaps that will give you a little insight into my great Town and a trip into the History books.

DEFENDING THE COUNTRY: NAPOLEON AND HITLER

My favourite place to visit are the "Western Heights" of Dover.
A fortified location that was first created to stop The French from invading in 1870.

This was modernised and extended in 1940 to fend off attacks from the Germans.

In the picture above you can see the ammunition stores that sit below the Gun Battery.

IMG_0544.JPG

This is one of the 3 stairways that runs from the Ammunition stores up to the Guns on top.

IMG_0558.JPG

Only the mounts are left behind and the Guns have long been removed.

If you look at the broken Concrete area you can see where the original guns were set 8ft into the ground.

The original Guns contained a 10" Rifled Muzzle Loading Gun.

These were upgraded during the German invasion to a modernised bolted down Gun which had better maneuverability than the original.

This is a picture of the modernised gun mount looking out into Dover Harbour and The English Channel.

IMG_0557.JPG

The battlements were covered with non angular Grassy humps to camouflage the buildings to make them almost impossible to spot from Land, Sea or Air.

IMG_0614.JPG

Spot the Battlements !!
Even on the zoomed in picture above you can barely make out where they are.

IMG_0593.JPG

This is a section of the "Old Fort" built during the Napoleonic Invasion.

Would you fancy running the Gauntlet with Cannons and Guns poking through the Battlement slots ??!!

Again you can see the Grassy Tops used to Camouflage the buildings from the German Planes.

A GREAT BRITISH HERO: CAPTAIN MATTHEW WEBB

The above Photograph is a Bust of the very heroic Captain Matthew Webb proudly looking out across the English Channel.

Webb was the first person unaided to achieve what was thought to be impossible
Completing the 21 Mile Swim in an agonising 21 Hrs 45 Mins on the 24th August 1875.

He Died 24th July 1883 attempting to Swim through the Whirlpool Rapids of Niagara Falls.
A feat many thought Suicidal which unfortunately proved correct.

MODERN DAY: BANKSY

The picture was mysteriously created overnight causing sensation in the Town.

It was created after Britain decide to vote for Brexit.

Here the Workman can be seen chipping away our member star from the European Flag !!

@minnowsupport - Upvoted as always for your work in helping microscopic Minnows to grow !!

The view of the old fort reminded me of a scene from Hornblower where, if I recall correctly, they assaulted a Spanish fort with a very similar configuration.

Great stuff mate!

@stormriderstudio Yeah it's shaped like a 50p from the Air. It had a Trench all the way around.
You literally wouldn't stand a chance of getting in there !

Amazing Architecture and great foresight for back in the day.

Both picturesque and informative. What a piece of history the photo of the worker removing Britain's star from the EU flag represents!

@swenger - Fortunately it's a huge piece so I doubt this one will be taken down and sold. I am so lucky to be able to see it up close. The detail is amazing.

I love the old Fort. When I am stressed I sit up there for hours just looking out across the English Channel. On a clear day you can see the Coastline of France.

I imagine what it would be like behind one of those Guns with a swarm of German Planes attacking and you are the first line of defence.

Wow! I can imagine how powerful it must be to sit there. I never realized that the coast of France was that close, to be able to see the coastline. There is such a strong sense of emotions that comes with visiting battle sites, when you stop and think about what happened there.

I have been to our Gettysburg a few times, where our bloodiest Civil War battle took place back in 1863. The experience of sitting among the rocks and boulders where they fought from, and went deaf from the echoes of the gunfire, is hard to adequately put into words.

Very nice place. Following you now.

Thanks for the follow. I have also added a follow in return. I hope you enjoy my content

Dover Castle is awesome. I haven't been since I was a nipper, but due another visit!

Haha yeah make sure you do. English Heritage need all the money they can get :-)

Great post @stormuk69, good to know you are patrolling the southern coastline, and looking out for any Aussies who might try to surf over the English Channel on Crocodiles.

lol thanks Nick

I remember visiting the white cliffs of Dover. Beautiful place. Great post

@snooway thanks for the kind comments. Yes I am very lucky to live in such a great Town
