Monday Photography Challenge hosted by SteemUSA - - - Turnagain Pass, Alaska - - -

in #steemusaphoto6 years ago
Turnagain Pass Alaska about 60 road miles south of Anchorage. Elevation is about 900 feet. Travel about another 70 miles and you will end in Seward, Alaska. Making a right at the hwy split and just under 90 miles will take you to Soldotna, Ak.

Pretty much the halfway stop for destinations no matter the direction of travel. The restroom facilities every time I have had to use them were actually surprisingly clean for government controlled facilities. There is more than ample parking for vehicles of all sizes. Even the largest of fifth-wheelers would have no problems parking or turning around.

That's what the view looks like at 65 miles per hour out the passenger window with your camera on full manual control. f/3.5 1/8000 sec. at 640 ISO on a Nikon D7500 camera with a 35mm lens. I had a fun picture day.

The two rooftops that you can see are part of the really huge pull-out rest stop area for the Pass. In the summer Turnagain Pass is a frequent stop and park spot of nature hikes and day trips. In the winter they keep both sides cleared, (there is a good sized lot on both sides of the roadway), for all the snowmobilers and cross country skiers. A very popular winter playground despite the avalanche hazards of the area and of getting there. This time of year there are plenty of berry pickers wandering the hills for crow berries and blueberries. Here is the USDA Forest Service link. Not a lot of info, but a little bit to gander at and look over.

You do need to be careful if you are going to wander off into the wild flowers and bush for berry picking, the grizzlies and black bears also like those berries, so were bells on your toes and don't be afraid to sing to yourself or make a little noise. The bears really hate off key singing, so most of us can be safe around bears, cause they will run away like their ears are on fire.

The above was my entry into SteemUSA Photography Challenge Monday

I worry about bigger threats like mosquitoes and ticks. :-)

The only "Ticks" in Alaska are the ones bought in on animals from the lower 48 and canada and other parts of the world that have ticks, same with fleas. They mostly die in the winter and do not survive very far from the campground areas that tourist hang out in. So you can get fleas and ticks at most of the hotels and motels that allow pets. If somehow or another they end up coming home on a pet and try to infest your home, in the winter they are easily taken care of, open the windows turn the heat off, on a 10 degree day, take the pet out for a walk and a play session in the snow and ice, go home after four hours, vacuum well, dispose of vacuum bag, re-heat house. No problems. Fleas and ticks gone. You might have to do it twice.

Good to know cold will kill them up north. We are over run with ticks spring and early summers here.
