Over a century ago, Mosquito has been a threat to the internal and external well being of the human body and health. Researches has been made and steps were taken to curb or reduce the effect on human body. Mosquito is the cause of the most common sickness which is Malaria popular among-st African.
According to wikipedia

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease affecting humans and other animals caused by parasitic protozoans (a group of single-celled microorganisms) belonging to the Plasmodium type. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. They are known as insect vectors.
There are three main groups of mosquitoes that spread diseases which are Anopheles, Culex and Aedes. They spread serious diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue, encephaltis and filariasis.

LIFE CYCLE AND HABITS
squitoes undergo complete metamorphosis. The first three stages are in water. The Anopheles mosquito breeds in clear moving water; the culex mosquito breeds in stagnant water, in small containers found in and around houses. The adult mosquito is an active flying insect which lives for about 2 weeks in the tropics. The female feeds on blood which it needs for the eggs to mature, while the male feed on plant juices. Most mosquitoes are active between sunset and sunrise.

CONTROL OF MOSQUITOES
They employs various methods in tackle mosquitoes which are:

  • Environmental,
  • chemical,
  • biological, and
  • genetic methods.
Environmental methods are aimed at the breeding and resting places of mosquito. These places are either destroyed or made unsuitable for these purposes. Some of the measures taken include the following:
  • Draining swamps, ditches, pools, clogged drains and similar places frequently so that mosquitoes cannot find suitable places to lay eggs.
  • Disposing unwanted containers such as tin cans and coconut shells which can collect water and provide suitable breeding places for mosquitoes. (This can be done by burying or burning the containers in places where there are no garbage disposal services).
  • Adding salt to ant-traps, thus making the water unsuitable for egg development.
  • Spreading stagnant water bodies which cannot be drained with oils such as kerosene. The oil form a surface film which prevents larvae from breathing tubes and spiracles and block them, thus killing the larvae and pupae.
  • Clearing shrubs and dense vegetation around residential areas so that the adult mosquitoes have no resting or hiding places.

Chemical methods include he use of insecticides which kill the various stages of he mosquitoes. Insecticides ma be sprayed on interior surfaces of houses or shelters. Oil used for spraying water bodies is often mixed with insecticides.

Biological methods use predators, parasites and pathogens to reduce the mosquito population. Mosquitoes eating fishes like the guppies are introduced into ponds and ditches to feed on the larvae and pupae, and thus control the mosquito population.

Genetic control includes the release of sterile male mosquitoes into the environment. When the sterile male mosquito mates with a normal female mosquito , the latter does not lay any eggs. if enough sterile male mosquito are released into the environment, the mosquito population will eventually die out.

Generally, more than one control method is used to reduce the mosquito population. In addition to these methods, health education and laws are also used in the fight to control these disease-transmitting vectors. The public is constantly educated through posters, newspapers, radios and televisions on how to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in and around their houses. In some countries , there are laws to punish people who provide condition favorable for the breeding of mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes has been the major cause for concern when a child/adult falls sick, there is 80/20 chances that the cause of the illness is malaria

Until next, Keep your Environment Clean
